Who is/was Boris Nemtsov?
Wiki - Russian Politician Boris Nemtsov

Boris Efimovich Nemtsov (Russian: Борис Ефимович Немцóв; born 9 October 1959, killed 27 February 2015[1]) is a Russian statesman and liberal politician, a co-chair of the RPR-PARNAS political party, one of the leaders of Solidarnost movement and an outspoken critic of Vladimir Putin.

Nemtsov may be best known as the 1st Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast (1991–97). Later he worked in Government of Russia as Minister of fuel and energy (1997), Vice Premier of Russia and Security Council member from 1997 to 1998. In 1998 he founded the Young Russia movement. In 1998, he co-founded the coalition group Right Cause and in 1999, he co-formed Union of Right Forces, electoral bloc and subsequently political party. He was elected several times as Russian parliament member. Nemtsov was a member of Congress of People's Deputies (1990), Federation Council (1993-1997) and State Duma (1999–2003). He also worked as Vice Speaker of the State Duma and the leader of parliamentary group of Union of Right Forces. After a split in the Union of Right Forces in 2008, he co-founded Solidarnost. In 2010, he co-formed coalition For Russia without Lawlessness and Corruption (was refused in registration as party). Since 2012 Nemtsov has been co-chair of Republican Party of Russia – People's Freedom Party (RPR-PARNAS), a registered political party.[2][3]

He is a candidate of physico-mathematical sciences. Known as an author of several publications criticising the Putin administration and an active organizer and participant of Dissenters' Marches, Strategy-31 and rallies «For Fair Elections».

He was shot four times in the chest in Moscow on the 28th of February, 2015, one day before an anti-crisis march.

He is an ardent opponent of Putin. He called on the "Bastards" involved in MH17 to be shown no mercy and did so while referencing the pro Russian rebels. He did not support the Russian action in Ukraine and was an opponent of annexing Crimea.

On 25 November 2007, Nemtsov was arrested by police during an unauthorized protest against President Putin, he told the press.[19] Nemtsov was released later that day. On 31 December 2010, he was again arrested with other opposition leaders during a rally against government restrictions on public protests. He was sentenced to 15 days in jail on 2 January 2011.[20] The arrests were condemned by US Senators John McCain and Joe Lieberman,[21] and by Amnesty International who described him as a prisoner of conscience.[22] The Economist called his arrest "a new low" in the governance of Russia.[23]

Nemtsov filed a complaint to the European Court of Human Rights, which, according to its lawyer, immediately accepted Nemtsov's complaint and agreed to treat the case through its new urgent procedure.[24] On 6 December 2011 Nemtsov was once again arrested, with at least a hundred other demonstrators, during the December 6 protests in Moscow.[25]

Random shooting?
Targeted for death by wing nuts?
Targeted for assassination by Putin?

We need to keep an eye on other Russian politicians who do not support Putin.

Hopefully this is an isolated incident with no connections to the government or any foreign governments.

RT - Opposition politician Boris Nemtsov killed in the center of Moscow

Famous Russian opposition politician Boris Nemtsov has been shot dead in the center of Moscow. The shots came from a vehicle. Reportedly, Nemtsov had previously received death threats on social media sites.

“Boris Nemtsov was shot four times in the center of Moscow at Vasilyevsky Spusk. An investigation team is working at the scene,” police said.

A law enforcement source told Interfax news agency that a white vehicle approached Nemtsov, fired the shots, and sped away.

Police have opened up a criminal investigation into the murder and illegal arms use, dubbing the operation 'Interception.'

“[We] confirm that the man was killed in central Moscow, documents for the name Boris Efimovich Nemtsov have been found,” the Interior Ministry’s press service said.

According to the police, Nemtsov was accompanied by a woman at the time of the murder. Her name is not being released due to the ongoing investigation.

“Nemtsov was walking on Bolshoy Moskvoretsky Bridge with a visitor from Ukraine. It was then when he was shot from a a car that was passing by,” said the ministry’s official representative, Elena Alekseeva, as quoted by Rossiya 24 TV channel.

“The woman who was with him is currently being interrogated in a police department,” Alekseeva added.

Police said that traffic has been restored on the bridge.

Before authorities could confirm Nemtsov’s death, the politician’s colleagues spoke out.

“Unfortunately, I'm currently looking at the body of Nemtsov on the Zamoskvoretskiy Bridge [near Vasilyevsky Spusk]," a fellow member of his RPR-Parnas party, Ilya Yashin, confirmed to RIA Novosti. “I see the body, and a lot of police.”

Opposition is a dangerous postion to be in in Russia at the moment.
I'm sure that Putin had nothing to do with this, however I wouldn't want to be the leader of a party opposing him.
Best of luck to Russia...

The Russian authorities have - whether through official sanction, or not - eliminated journalists and opponents. This is worrying and another sign of the slide towards authoritarianism. Your average Russian should be very afraid, if it were not for the fact that the media is State owned and cowed, so the implications are not reported.

Anytime now Putin lovers will come over and say that it was actually the US' fault, that Nemtsov was killed by CIA so to demonize Putin, that Putin and his KGB friends have absolutely nothing to do with te death of a Putin critic who was about to organize an anti-Putin march.

Because surely the CIA would kill Nemtsov instead of simply using him as a point of media influence inside Russia, since he already was a critic of Putin's policy in the first place! But hey, why listen to logic when we can simply accuse the CIA of every evils that goes in the World.

Wow.

That was quick.

CIA had him killed in ongoing effort to demonize Putin because he is against western NWO

As if there is no Eastern NWO.

Below is the SCO - an economical and military alliance of almost all of the East:

Right, no NWO there, eh?
