Check the article for their take on the situation. It did surprise me that London and New York City made the top 16

The full list of most unsafe cities for women to travel in is:

1. Bogota, Colombia
2. Mexico City
3. Lima, Peru
4. New Delhi

8. Bangkok
9. Moscow
10. Manila, Philippines
11. Paris
12. Seoul, South Korea
13. London
14. Beijing
15. Tokyo
16. New York

Grimpachi must be right, this must be a list of dangerous tourist spots.

Diepsloot, in South Africa, is by far and away the most dangerous place for a female on this Planet.

But I doubt many travel there.

The ones who live there though, they deserve an International Army intervention to rid the place of its rapists.

1/4 men apparently.

There is a group of vigilantes in Diepsloot (Deep Slope) who hunt them down, beat them senseless in front of the townsfolk, then end their meaningless existence with a tyre fire.

Horrid place for women and children.

I have to echo everyone else who said New York.

I am there weekly and the New York of today is far, far safer than the New York of the early 1990's and one of the best cities to travel to. The Mid-Town portion (Times Square, 5th Ave) is so touristy now that you can walk around at 3AM and not have much to worry about.

You need to go out of your way to get mugged in Manhattan now.

It also depends on how tall/ short, fat/thin, smart/ dumb, attractive/ average/ ugly you are as a woman too. Don't dress too girly. Wear pants and looser clothing. All of these factors plus where in these cities you go, matter to your situation. I am 5' 10" and weigh enough that nobody messes with me. Plus I have an assertive personality. Always spilt your money and credit cards up in two or more places. Take an over the shoulder purse that zips shut. Jackets with inside pockets with zippers is smart. Equestrian jackets have these for riders who don't want their stuff falling out of pockets. Carry pepper spray. Travel with someone. Tell people your husband is in the men's room. Wear a wedding ring even if you are not married. Don't wear expensive jewelry on trips. Leave it at home. Wear your old clothes on trips and leave them behind to make room for souvenirs.
I have been to New York City airports which are really dirty, Paris is pick pocket city, London which has rude drivers, and Mexico which is pick pocket city. I tower over all the Mexican men. I stopped my father from being mugged on a Mexican public bus at the age of eighteen in 1984. Three men were trying to steel his wallet. Being tall is a lovely luxury. I would never go to the Middle East as a women. All the bad cities should have been listed from there. Anyone remember that female London reporter that got gang raped in Cairo Egypt during those riots? Right in the town square?

A woman is much safer in Paris than in Dallas, Texas

Cases contained in Casey’s report are highly disturbing. One concerns an alleged rape with a broken bottle, and girls being ordered to kiss the feet of a perpetrator at gunpoint. A mind-numbing 61 pregnancies were attributed to rapes. “Children were sexually exploited by men who came largely from the Pakistani heritage community,” the report stated. “Not enough was done to acknowledge this, to stop it happening, to protect children, to support victims and to apprehend perpetrators.” Inspectors further noted that council members bullied victims, with a witness insisting the council viewed those victims as “little slags.”

The police weren’t any better, refusing to believe accusations made by young girls on numerous occasions. “They were threatened with wasting police time, they were told they had consented to sex and, on occasion, they were arrested at the scene of a crime, rather than the perpetrators,” the report reveals.

Adding insult to injury, whistleblowers who raised concerns lost their jobs. “I stepped forward on behalf of young people – it cost me my job and my career,” one ex-staff member revealed.

Notice a common problem for women who do not chose to wear a Burqa or be escorted in certain European cities ?

Tokyo coupled with the Japanese immigration policies surprised me more than any other place who made the list..

Cat calling is annoying but if I am wasting time looking at a list like this I want to know where women get raped, murdered, and robbed the most.

Edit: Also, I was going to say that what makes places the most dangerous at times is that you don't understand the area and language.

True story: My girlfriend and I were looking at places to visit and we're like...geez I wonder if it's dangerous. So we looked up this one city and then compared it to the area we currently live in and the crime rate was much lower. We thought it was funny(we don't own a car). But in reality, danger that you know well is different then danger you don't know at all. When we are walking around in our current neighborhood(very dangerous), we know which areas to avoid etc., we know where the crooks hang out etc...but when you are visiting other places there is a type of naive thinking due to unknown knowledge.

Interesting that none of the actual Most Dangerous Cities are not on the list.
You know, the middle eatern ones...

Really, is it safer for a woman to walk down the bullet riddled moonscape of Aleppo Syria than NYC?
How about Mogadishu?

I seriously doubt that...

I think they were including tourist destinations.

Just because somewhere exists doesn't mean it's a tourist destination.

I arrived there by train - alone - at 9 PM and wandered the streets for 3 hours until my outgoing train at midnight. I hauled a wheeled suitcase behind me and looked just about as tourist as they come. Turned down panhandlers with a smile and a head shake "I don't carry cash." Never a problem, not even a scary moment. So, Local Train seems to be the better option for most of the Mumbaikars. Matheran is a beautiful Hill Station and must visit place near by Mumbai. It is located in the Raigad district. It is approximate 90 km from Mumbai, and 120 km from Pune by road.

Although I know Jakarta is in a muslem country. I know a few women who have visited Jakarta before and had zero issues with their safety.

For a muslem country it's actually pretty pro women. even have female martial arts masters, and they encourage all women to learn martial arts. I'm sure this lady doesn't feel unsafe in Indonesia.

I think in many cases, it's the entire country; India is not safe, nor Mexico... most of the Middle East is not safe, England is great, the US is fairly good - scratch that, GREAT if you manage yourself properly - compared to most places in the world. Sad fact.
