Your experience was different than mine, but then I was with 8th graders. There is a world of difference between 3rd and 8th grade. Also you were there for a short period of time in the school day, not as the day-to-day teacher. Even older kids will behave for that because it's something new out of their daily routine.

Also, you are not asking them to read to you. You were likely reading to them. My kids loved having me read to them and would almost always behave very well for that. The sad thing was that they could not do the reading for themselves in most cases as they were woefully below reading level.

Again, home environment. Did you ever spend entire lunch hours with a parent on the phone in tears with you become she cannot control her child? I have. Did you ever have a parent who is clearly angry with you become her son is failing, but she can't speak English so she can't understand why? I have. Did you have the parent who is clearly on something and has the failing kid? I have.

The problems start at home.

I disagree that the situation is becoming worse. This is generally the generation that grew up with massive bigotry and racism in the southern states (and elsewhere) and it is diminishing on the whole.

Just look at ignorance in general, it is declining. There will always be backwater sh*t holes where lack of education and religious delusions are still creating an indoctrinated youth, but these are always diminishing. Even in fifty years there will still be some places where the level of intelligence is far lower than the national average.

Societies are moving on, they are evolving, and cretins like this man are becoming an extreme minority.

I have to agree with you; as this generation of OWM, "Old White Men" dies off the situation could and should get far better for the majority of the country. Demographics is destiny and latest stats I heard were to the effect that "whites" will be a minority group by 2030 with no one group representing a racial majority. How long that will last, I don't know.

This "public official" is an absolute disgrace to the position of office in which he (unjustly) resides.

I know this might be a little far from the original thread premise - but I firmly believe it takes a Village to raise children. If a little one is going to a school where he or she is not respected and honored for who they are, and their strengths and talents are not nurtured accordingly, no amount of funding is going to make a lick of difference in those children's lives.

We need a better teacher selection program - one that focuses on the prospective educator being well rounded in their teaching methodology and the ability to bring a child's natural talents to the forefront and move them forward in that direction. Kindergarten and the first and second years of Elementary school are the perfect time to "get to know" the classroom and the kids formative personalities before they become jaded and lost in the system.

One manner in which this might be attained is easy psychological tests to access the child's interests, preexisting knowledge base and general aptitude every school year. Move like minded kids into the same classrooms where they can bounce ideas off one another. It's encourages teamwork and other positive results. Teachers in like minded classrooms can be more focused on lesson plans as opposed to pure disciplinary management of disruptive students.

Social programs need an overhaul.
Education needs an overhaul in these areas as well.

I have lived in several inner-city areas of mixed ethnicity for the past twenty years, and currently reside in a diverse low income neighborhood. We had a problem with "gang activity" from the ne'er-do-wells for a while, but we all worked together in a peaceful way to let them no there was no market for hate and criminal activity around here. We now have more happy families and less drug dealers - and the children, disabled and elderly in our neighborhood are our prime concern.

When the Systems fail people time and time again - the People have to take up the slack to make things right.

Community involvement programs, teaching and homeschooling with helpful neighbors can do wonders.

It's not the all encompassing answer - but it's a start in the right direction.

That is going to be such a hostile environment for white people. It's amazing how fast white people are becoming a minority in their own countries.

But the former mayor, former police chief and current first-term legislator said he had no idea his remarks would appear in a story and, if he had, he wouldn't have made them.

ATS: is this fixable, or are we doomed?

Is it fixable?

My experience has shown that things that live beneath the rocks avoid daylight...

If there is a "Fix" it is through casting light in OPs like this.

That light might not "Fix" the individual's racism, but it usually sends the cowards back peddling and scurrying back beneath the rock they emerged from.

So perhaps containment through public shaming is the short term strategy, with progress and evolution being the long term strategy?

Are you trying to say that the US is a white country?
Just cause they made up the majority for a number of years doesn't make it so.
The statue in New York doesn't mention race, but calls for any and all looking for a better life.

I think it is a hostile environment for ignorance and racism, not white people...The vast majority of white people are not ignorant racists and are doing just fine.

And it doesn't even need to be massive funding to fix the schools. A few thousand in repairs here, new science textbooks over there, two more teachers for there, a dozen new computers here, basic school supplies here, 2 lunch time aids over there. Simple really. These small things have big impacts.

But yeah, this guy is an dinosaur and needs to be kicked out of office.

yeah I was wondering the same thing, sometimes throwing more money at a problem isn`t the best solution.

Only 28% of them aren`t up to par in reading that means that 72% are, so whatever they are doing is working for the 72%.
I`m not convinced that throwing more money at the school system will bring that other 28% up to reading standards.

The home environment can be a reason, however, it is not the only one. That would be like suggesting all factors outside the family life are due to a parent's neglect or inability.

What about social factors, economical, an unbalanced justice system. Surely these parlay into the equation. Don't get me wrong, parents play a critical role in the home, however, social stigmas and and biased viewpoints towards certain ethnic groups exist. How many kids have a parent locked up in a prison or just not there. It's easy to say it's all starts at home, some of it does. But, for those left holding the bag it's extremely difficult to maintain.

A parent can do all they can to protect their children, but, their are circumstances outside of the control that affects us no matter how much we try an shield ourselves from it.

Having said that, and until everyone understands and accepts what is happening, or at least the majority, disparities and division will persist. It's no longer color that separates us, IMO, the only color that matters is green with pictures of dead presidents on them.

I don't know what has to be done to fix the problem, but money and greed usually account for a large portion of it, and profits above people is becoming our world's motto, IMO.

I was of the impression American taxes pay for early education?

Taxes that those children couldn't possibly contribute to.

Home school, private school.

Bold is mine, this is one of just the many comments that agree with what this man is saying...
Maybe we are doomed

I think it's an overreaction to assume "we're doomed" because someone may agree with an admittedly racist generalization. Do you have to be a racist to see the disproportionately high level of crime committed by blacks? Is the arithmetic racist?

It seems that, here in the US, and elsewhere, ignorant racism amongst stupid white men isn't just not going away, it's proliferating in exasperating ways. In Mississippi, bastion of inbreed intolerance, state Representative Gene Alday is opposing an increase in education funding targeted at increase reading proficiency in elementary school students. His rationale is that education funding for children in black families is pointless.

While I am a huge supporter of upgrades to education infrastructure, I am highly offended that you insult white men and the state of Mississippi because of the stupidity of one individual. How do you suppose that would go down if you reversed your bigotry to black men instead of white men? Sorry, I can't excuse your ignorant commentary which was unnecessary to make the point that this Representative was an idiot.

Every time we turn around be it for whites or black or who ever someone is telling us we need more money to teach our kids to read. Its like we are being held up by the education system from the ground up. We have be hearing this for years and dumping money into it for years and still we are told Jim Bob and Tyron cant read.

Recently here we had a large public school system exposed for fudging attendance numbers in order to qualify for more federal money. Its a gravy train and still many cant read and anyone that wont buy into more and more money is a racist or a tight ass.

I am confused how crime statistics would warrant less education funding for third grade children?

Are you contending that 3rd graders are responsible for an uptick in Crime in Mississippi? And that less education funding is the solution?

The only insult to the state was the ignorant comment it's own representative made and portrayed Mississippi as such, yet, you reverse it around.

The truly sad part is that more than likely, most of his republican constituency in Mississippi would agree with his statements. Off the record, of course.

With respect to your question regarding whether or not "we're doomed," I wouldn't say that "we" are but the way the GOP is going, they sure as hell are!

Just like Romney's 47% statement, when they say what they really think, the ignorance, bigotry and racism shines through like a lighthouse in the night.

Yeah I gotta agree with this.

I was home schooled and all of our materials put together cost less than 100 bucks per year(not counting my mother's free labor of course).

When I started doing the first 2 years of classes at the community college I nearly had a heart attack when there were college students stuttering through college level course work(reading comprehension).

I don't know what the hell public schools are wasting all the money on but whatever their focus is, it isn't what needs to be focused on. Reading also isn't terribly difficult but it requires a lot of practice.

I think that the first five years of school should be limited to reading(and grammar), writing(grammar), spelling, and mathematics.

Absolutely nothing else needs to be "taught" to that age group.

Until you are a master at both reading and writing, you shouldn't be learning anything else. If you know those two subjects, the sky is the limit because you can learn anything you want to.

Either way, to the OP:

That guy is an idiot.

There's nothing else to really say about him.

Also, I don't know anything about the proposed program(details) they were trying to fund. Looking through topic I may have missed it. Do you have a link or can direct me where to find it?

Truth is even if there isn't any racism detectable anyone that stands up to the educational guilt tripping and hold up routine is going to be called a racist.

And its ok for a black congress person on any level to advocate for their race in just about any fashion but don't let a white legislator complain about whites subsidizing the larger part of black education. More doom porn if they don't dump in another several million.
