Italy ready for military intervention in Libya

Italy wants to do a military intervention in Libya as soon as possible. Premier Renzi is only waiting for a UN resolution that allows the possibility to send troops. Italians who are still in Libya, are called to leave the country.

The Italian government is very concerned about the security situation in Libya. "This concern is mainly fuelled by the rise of jihadists militias in northern Libya. This week Islamic fighters firmed their grip on the city of Sirte, northeast of Tripoli. The fighters pledged loyalty to the caliphate of the Islamic State in Iraq Syria when they did that, "says NIS correspondent Rop Zoutberg.

So Italian boots on the ground in the mess which it has now become...

"Are they being thrown in so they need to be helped out later on by others ?"

Recent Italian military operations show a lot of participation in the important military conflicts, Lebanon (`82-`84), Gulf War (`90-`91), Bosnian War (`92-`95), Somalia II (`92-`95), Albania (`97), Kosovo War (`99), Afghanistan (`01–present), Iraq War (`03-`06), Lebanon (`06–present) and Libya (`11).

They can count on support for sure from their "friends" if things go bad, and so it might go "bad" for them by design.

They've been paying IS for hostages. Not happy with them, but I'm glad they'll be doing something. I imagine this is just going to force the rest of the coalition to put boots down though, at least the Europeans.

Do you really believe the Italians would do that to their own people/troops?

it is the euros that need the middle-east oil, not us. I'm pretty sure even the Euro militaries are capable of handling Isis.

Perhaps in the long run this is the best way to go...

Probably part of their bail out agreement.

Most of Europe's oil comes from Russia, Norway and Africa.

Italy cannot afford such military adventurism.....
Besides that their tanks come with only one forward speed and four gears in reverse......

Italy probably want to smash the trafficking rings which smuggles desperate people across the Med from Libya to Italy.
They take big money then abandon people to die in overfilled boats off the coast of Italy, and the money funds terrorists.

That could be part of the reason why italy wants to intervene in Libya.

Well everyone else has abandoned Libya and Libya elected a government and yet you still need a UN resolution to intervene, as if an invitation from the elected government is not enough?
