This story is also at least 16 hours old from what I have found so far.
I haven't seen much in US MSM about it yet.
Maybe the reporters whose spouses work at the White House have been told to sit on the story?

Am I the only one who finds this pretty convenient, considering that Obama just went to congress about putting boots on the ground?

ISIS can't be that stupid?

Didn't Obama just claim yesterday that ISIS was losing ground?
Why isn't this on the news tonight? This is huge.
WTF is going on?

Apparently nobody told ISIS that when you lob off a bunch of western heads and set a Jordanian on fire, you get a ground war on your turf for the next 15 years. Where have these guys been for the last 15 years? Mexico?

Well to be fair he hasn't even wanted to send people over, but the public has been crying for him to do so.

So to then turn around and be mad that those troops get harmed in the process...

So HE says.......

What public are you talking about? The mindless ones who believe in the terror fear "brought to you" by the MSM?

As far as the politicians who are barking to send in ground troops? Let them lead the charge! Time to go back to the days of old where Kings lead the charge! I'm tired of these corrupt cowards sitting in their ivory tower sending their serf slaves to fight wars that were created in the first place!

Pffffffft, IF the truth ever comes out, we will see that ISIS was created by the same governments that used their actions to create MORE draconian laws against the people who believe in this fear mongering terrorist crap! It's already been done! Remember 9/11?

From FOX News.com (4 hours ago):

There was no direct attack on the Al Asad air base,” the spokeswoman assured, while acknowledging reports of “ineffective indirect fire in the vicinity of the base.”

Reuters had reported that, according to unnamed officials, a group of insurgents did attack the well-fortified base but failed to break in.

The Al Asad air base is where 320 U.S. Marines are stationed training Iraqi forces. It is a mere 13-minute drive from al-Baghdadi to the base.

That goes both ways, an enemy cant take something over if they can't come out in the open.
I do agree war is sick,
however that is what war is.

If true they'll want this hushed for as long as possible, IS still have tens of thousands of fighters and ton of heavy weaponry that they've been pulling back, any assault on raqqa will take months of siege and thousands of lives, whoever goes in there is going to see true hell, nobody wants this job.

They've been threatening this base for weeks, it's not been well reported (or at all in the US, it seems - I wonder why....)

Story here, dated 19 December 2014 - from the BBC

The Iraqi's there were grateful of the Marines presence as they knew the Americans would never let it fall and risk losing that many in one go.

As for the bravado on the front page of this thread, I wouldn't be so sure - it's a training mission, how well armed and supplied are these Marines? Lacking any heavy weaponry or significant stores of ammunition, I wouldn't fancy their chances for long if the base is surrounded, regardless of their (well deserved) reputation.

They might not have heavy weapons, and eventually they will lose the base, but even without them the Marines will put a world of hurt on the ISIS fighters.

Marines will just call in close air support for a target rich environment.

For ISIS to take Ain al-Asad air base they have to leave areas they can hide.

If they take a airbase then they are subject to carpet bombing due to them being out side a civilian area.

Back in the day Spartans were the marines of their time.

Laconophiliacs abound.

somehow the 320 Marines who are specialists in training troops are thought to be Rangers/Mercenary grade soldiers... get real the Marines over there are training instructors with just a modicum of combat proficiency... they were relying on the Iraqi Security Forces to provide Safety... those 300+ most likely ain't got nutting but rifles or .45s sidearms and were not proficient with battle gear or improvised battle gear like some kind of Rambo....

fight they will, If-When need be I AM SURE

but if you search web... find the latest articles about how the Saudi's empty the prisons of death-penalty criminals to fight the Syrians under ISIS... what's to say those 1000s of criminals are not with the ISIS around Baghdad & the airbase under siege right now

Some of the tweets coming out of the area said that ISIS fighters were in control of at least one building in the air base.
If that is the case, it would make air support difficult.
If ISIS did take the air base, they would most likely have some US prisoners. I don't know how eager Obama would be to carpet bomb the area in that situation.
