60 Minutes correspondent Bob Simon died Wednesday evening in a car accident in New York.
The CBS newsman was riding in a livery cab that struck another car and then crashed into a median on the West Side Highway, his network confirmed.
Simon, the recipient of 24 Emmy awards — including a Lifetime Achievement Emmy — joined the Eye Network’s news division in 1967. He began regularly contributing to the Sunday-night newsmagazine in 1996.
According to the NYPD, Simon was traveling in a Lincoln Town car livery cab that was traveling south on 12th Avenue when the driver, a 44-year-old man, struck the driver's side of a 2003 Mercedes Benz, which had been stopped at a red light at 30th Street. Police say, "After the initial collision, the Lincoln Town car careened into metal stanchions separating the north and south bound traffic."
The Lincoln Town Car in which Simon, 73, was riding collided with a Mercedes-Benz, then veered across the roadway and plowed into a pedestrian expansion near West 30th Street at about 7 p.m...
The driver of the Mercedes... said the black car was veering erratically before the crash.
“He swerved into me,” said the ... Mercedes driver... “He hit me and he looked like he lost control of the car.”
...The Town Car was so badly mangled, rescuers had to pry open the roof to extract him from the rear of the car.
...The 44-year-old Lincoln driver — identified as Reshad Abdul Fedahi — was treated by first responders for a possible heart attack, according to police sources. He also had two broken legs, a busted right arm and tested negative for booze, law enforcement sources said.
It was not clear if Fedahi actually suffered a heart attack, nor was it immediately clear if he was stricken before or after the crash.

Interesting point. Does anyone know what stories all these journalists were working on?

The last story Simon was working on was about a possible cure for Ebola.
Bob Simon's last story, about a quest to cure Ebola, will air this Sunday
The piece was aired after his death.

Two of the three that died had spend time as a captive in Iraq and one had just finished interviewing Snowden before his death. Not sure any of that is connected but it's interesting perhaps to consider when looking for a connection.
