I guess NK scared them enough to restart nuke production... (yeah right)

WASHINGTON (AP)--The Bush administration may make more than 450 plutonium warhead triggers a year under a plan to resume production of the devices, according to an Energy Department draft environmental review released Monday.

The department stopped making plutonium pits, or triggers, for warheads in 1989. The pit, about the size of a softball, is a critical component of a nuclear weapon.

I read this too Dragon. Do you think we will alter our posture in a major way?

I also wonder at the fixed number being released to the press??

Well this is obviously a violation of nuclear weapons controls treaties we signed in the 80s and 90s. Kind of puts us in the same boat as North Korea using that kind of logic.

As for the number of pits, well, if they are claiming 450, I would suspect 900 really are being made.

I had a project associated with PANTEX once, where they dismantled nuclear weapons. I dont know if they were supposed to destroy the pits, or just take them out of the weapon.

Makes me wonder what they did with them after taking them out of the weapon?

Some message Bush is telling the world.

"You better stop producing nukes, but we can still make them."
