Not everyone that uses VPN has bad intentions most of them value privacy and don't
want to give information to others so that they can use it against them. Most of them
are aware what can happen if they don't use VPN. I am not saying that that is a foolproof
method, but you should do all you can do to protect yourself.

ok i need a vpn but when i looked all the free ones where slow or did not work as advertised,
i refuse to pay for a virtual private network on the basis i already pay my i.s.p who is now restricting what sites i can view.
this service should be free,,,so we have to pay again for freedom (freedom has a price?).
does anyone know of a fast free vpn anything else is just wrong in the sense we should all be anonymous on the net simply to protect our selfs and our familys .

"I haven't used an anti virus for years."

"So far so good. Unless I decide to visit shady sites. "

I hope you are not running Windows. If that is the case I am almost sure that
you won't be able to install an antivirus software anymore if you want to.

Not only on shady sites you can get malware, if someone penetrated your computer,
they will leave malware to get in back again or use your computer in attacks against
other computers or worse. It will get you in allot of trouble. Again that isn't a foolproof
method but it's a start.

People should not fear people who use VPN, they should fear the people that don't
want you to secure yourself. I say anyone that does not want you secure yourself does
not have good intentions.

You could use TOR or maybe a free shell account that forwards connections and configure your web browser to use it.

Most free VPN services require you to have at least basic networking knowledge.

Yes, I am on a Windows machine!

Seriously though, I appreciate the info you've shared. I understand there are threats out there in the cyber world too, though I may be naive to all of the ins and outs as to how I can be effected and what they can do. Either to my computer, through my computer, or with my information. There isn't much personal data on this computer in those regards though.

There are malware out there that can save every key you type, so they can
get all your passwords and banking information. They can also install a child
pornography server on your computer. Seriously a virus scanner can save you
from some serious trouble.

I recommend you to pay an IT Security Expert to secure your computer.

I use the free Malware Bytes to scan every so often.

Also, I don't have a bank account. Or money for that matter.

I will take the security of my computer more seriously, regardless of whether or not I have anything valuable on here. I have a couple friends who can help me out and give me more advice.

Canada’s leading surveillance agency is monitoring millions of Internet users’ file downloads in a dragnet search to identify extremists, according to top-secret documents.

firstlook.org...

According to the documents, the LEVITATION program can monitor downloads in several countries across Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, and North America.

LEVITATION does not rely on cooperation from any of the file-sharing companies. A separate secret CSE operation codenamed ATOMIC BANJO obtains the data directly from internet cables that it has tapped into, and the agency then sifts out the unique IP address of each computer that downloaded files from the targeted websites.

As of mid-2012, CSE was maintaining a list of 2,200 particular download links that it regarded as connected to suspicious “documents of interest.” Anyone clicking on those links could have found themselves subject to extra scrutiny from the spies.

The same list includes downloads that CSE monitored in closely allied countries, including the United Kingdom, United States, Spain, Brazil, Germany and Portugal.

That right finger will get you in trouble
