Thats not exactly true, there are laws defining how much emissions you are allowed and catalytic converters and such. You can't just go around spewing as much as humanly possible, at least not legally passing an inspection and doing that.

They used to have peanut coated doughnuts in the bakeries. man I loved those things!! I have not seen on in a long time! They don't seem to make them anymore since so many became allergic to the peanuts.

I have to wonder...
Just what was it that suddenly made so many people allergic to peanuts that companies had to stop using them to make things like peanut doughnuts and schools to ban them???

The population increase, imo.
The more people there are, the more that are allergic to things, the more that smoke, and the more that hate it.
Peanuts and smoking aren't new by any means, it's 2015.
People are.

No, not a chance. The sheer proportion of allergies is what's increased, meaning the proportion of the population that has them now compared to the proportion 30 years ago has grown astoundingly. Peanut excipients in the vaccines anyone? It's so obvious it's hilarious. It's the same thing with when they used eggs as excipients i the 60s ,70s, egg allergies were everywhere. Not so much now. So now they don't use either peanuts or eggs - give it 20 years, the penaut allergies will die down and then it'll be something else.

So you really really like popcorn?

Do you really want to a real comparison.

How about if they passed a law that you can NEVER cook popcorn in any building anywhere in a province of 13 million or so?

Examples have already been used in this thread and you are merely recycling the same argument:

How about if they banned pets in every apartment or condo building in your province. Like your dog or your cat? Tough people are allergic. Why should allergic people have to stand with you in an elevator and be exposed to the pet dander on your cloth.

Like to cook a steak once in awhile - why should your vegan neighbour have to endure a smell he finds gross?

Like to cook with garlic or curry - keep it yourself.

There are million such examples - its ridiculous to pick on smoking only. Its not the only smell people don't like and its not the only asthma trigger.

Why should smoking be any different?

As a matter of fact, if you can smell your neighbours apartment, its a pretty good indication that either the ventilation is faulty or the place was poorly built and there is a gap around the door. In any event, that kind of shoddyness could indicate that your living in a death trap that will cause your death.

I live in an apartment with gas stoves. What if my neighbour lets the pilot light blow out and leaves the gas on? With gaps around the door, I could be asphyxiated with carbon monoxide.

As a courtesy, I always install weather stripping on my door. Get over yourselves.

If they are allowed to ban smoking in every multi-unit building - there is a good chance that the people who are allergic to pets will demand the same consideration

Then the garlic and curry haters.

Do your really want to live in a country where every single level of government is in your home, telling you what you can and cannot do?

Can nothing be resolved between neighbours anymore? Its been that way for hundreds of years. Why do we need government for every single thing. How bid do you want your government to be anyway.

Remember, a government that is big enough to give you everything you want, is also big enough to take everything you have!

The continued comparison between cigarettes and pungent veggies is #'in hilarious, thanks thread!

I don't have a problem with cigarettes because they smell awful, though they do smell awful enough to ruin the olfactory environment for everyone's whose sense of smell hasn't been trashed in 100 feet in every direction.

I have a problem with cigarettes because I do not consent to breathing carcinogenic pollution.

You guys really have a problem with me choosing not to breathe that.

"Oh but you have to breathe awful car fumes so your argument is herpaderpaherp!"

I get to breathe oil refinery fumes, coal fumes, and a constant thick blanket of car exhaust all day every winter. So you think that makes it ok to breathe even more crap in my face? woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow. So people who were just in a fire shouldn't complain if you breathe smoke in their face, there's worse stuff in their lungs already, right?

Look, I don't care if you guys were addicted to huffing radon paint instead.

You start endangering other people's long term health by doing it around people and we're going to make you move.

Deal with it.

Are you seriously implying that smoking isn't bad for you and doesn't cause health problems?

Yes I am without the slightest shadow of doubt. This is not the main cause of the Western societies high disease rate. The Doctors know it , the pharmaceutical giants know it. But if you remove the main dietary triggers for the general malaise affecting the developed world, it would cause an economic catastrophe. Everyone in the medical profession knows it everyone in government knows it as well. If they didn't they would be incompetent.

When dealing with any illness you go for the simplest cause first, The main cause of premature death is Heart problems. If this was changed their would be so many professionals bemoaning the loss of their middle class income it would be laughable. But also economically catastrophic. nutritionstudies.org...

At least some of us know what's going on and can make the informed choice. With regards to our own health. Its simple crap food makes crap bodies.

Yes excessive smoking is bad for you, so everything else. In China they all smoke like theirs no tomorrow, but they aren't dropping like flies,
Because whatever harm it might cause is more than taken care of by their immune systems which are in much better shape than ours. Read the "Asian paradox" with regards to smoking.

You are funny. I am a nazi SS because I think people shouldn't be able to smoke in community buildings? No need to bring up anything else, because I didn't comment on anything else. You are right though, that is so very nazi of me and so very jewish of you. You are the modern day Anne Frank, you just need to write a book about how difficult your life has become as a smoker. HIding away in closets smoking cigs, ducking the "Man" and persecution for your sins.

SOOOOOOO dramatic. So selfish, couldn't care less about anyone or anything other then your god given right to burn cigarettes anywhere and anytime you damn well choose, by God! Still waiting for the argument that the right to smoke cigs anywhere you want was fought for by your grandfathers in Vietnam, WW2, Korea, and WW1. The civil war wasn't about slavery or states rights, it was actually over the North wanting to ban public smoking and the south fighting it because they grew lots of tobacco.

You can even start wearing Che Guevarra shirts.
I'm not gonna say much about what they American soldiers were fighting for, though the resounding answer is always "Freedom". I will say this, when we came to this continent it was for the riches we would find. That is what the King was funding when he set out to have this region explored. As we settled here we found we could not deliver those riches in the form of gold and jewels and what have you in a capacity that was going to please the regime that funded it. We almost "died out" here (some settlements did die out) before we could even get a foothold. Then the natives showed us how to grow tobacco. IT WAS WHAT MADE TRADE POSSIBLE. We had something other than abject failure to bring back to our benefactors. So a case could be made that tobacco built this country and made Canada possible.

For those on the anti smoking side, the first point you'll make is "Look!! Cigarette Smoke!!" and ignore all the other things you're breathing. After you've torn out all the old carpet, replaced the cabinets, unplugged all the air fresheners [ they smell good so they just can't be bad for you right? ] had a test for asbestos if you live in an older home or building, throw away all your cleaning products, get rid of all the bug spray or insect repellent and have your heating system checked and fixed if needed, junk that new car [ all that plastic and treated leather omitting fumes ya know ]...........then we can start talking about second hand smoke. But, once again, that doesn't fit the "Get The Smokers!!" campaign, so it'll be ignored or brushed aside because "But...But... that's different!!"

I don't have any of those things in my home (except for cleaning products, but only the "clean" ones, no pun intended, are allowed), can I be considered an official anti smoking person?

Sorry, that argument doesn't work. You may smell the smoke from a smoker down the street. It doesn't hurt you one bit.

So, because you didn't see a study telling it it's true you don't believe me? How nice of you.

Not at all.

No idea where you got that from. Please tell me which of my habits you pay for?

Since I am not from Canada, I don't pay for any of your habits through medical care. I don't even know what bad habits you have for that matter.

But people get sick, through bad habits or not, and socialized healthcare ensures we all pay for the care of those individuals.

You should probably smoke that outdoors as well.

ETA: You could also try vaping it, vaping oil, or even eating edibles. None of those produce burnt smoke and would all be healthier in the air.
Maybe healthier to the air but studies have not been done on long term effects of any of these options either. Which is also why the same people who got the smoking bans in place are now after the vaping industry too. The zero tolerance attitude is not solely owned by smokers who refuse to quit but by the "savers of humanity" who seek to ban anything they deem harmful in any way. I'd say we are at least half way down the slippery slope already. I've quit but still vape and I have my "ice cleats on". I'm not sliding any more and I might even begin walking back to the top IF I CHOOSE.

It's not a question of "finding it gross", it's a question of health.

Why are you (and several other members) talking about it as if it wasn't a health problem? Because you don't have that problem?

PS: I think I know how to avoid a potential smoking ban; start a religion in which all worshippers smoke. That way, if you have a right to follow your own religion then you need to have the right to smoke.

Last year I was imprisoned in our local hospital for quite some time (weeks) one night I signed myself out for a walk about 3 am or so. My whole idea of a walk was to have a smoke. I signed out and the Nurses at the desk are laughing because the place is locked down for the night and there is no way I am getting outside.

I had a monitor on me which indicated my location and heart rate etc etc. I checked all the doors and sure as heck they were locked and the only option was the fire doors which I smartly chose not to open.

This is a brand new hospital with all the security and cameras you could wish for ( I wished for none of this) anyways after not being able to find a way out I got to thinking about the underground parking.

I figured all the Doctors get the good heated/cooled parking inside and I was correct. Took the elevator down to the basement and walked up to the big roll up door and hit the open button. I was free! and was careful to make my way to the city property before lighting up a smoke......

It was a bit chilly as I only had my gown on and my shoes but I had no complaints at all, that was till I saw this neon green vested person making haste towards me at an astonishing rate.

Checking to make sure I was on city property and not Hospital property I awaited the arrival of my new found friend. The security guy was pissed off big time, He says to me put that smoke out and follow me back inside. I asked him If I was breaking a law and he just scowled at me in answer.
So then I asked him how he knew where I was and he says we were watching you on the security cameras and I better get back inside the Hospital.

I said I want to finish this smoke and who am I harming besides myself? He made it plain as day to me that if I did not follow him back inside they would forcibly take in indoors. So off he goes march stepping with me following at very slow walk which pissed him off even more:-) All the while I was finishing my smoke and smiling whilst he kept looking back and telling me to hurry up.

My punishment for that night was that he paraded me through the Emergency Department (which is always busy night or day) to the amusement of people waiting to be seen by a doctor.

He walked my through there in my beautiful flowered gown and my two IV's stuck in my elbows and my monitor hanging around my neck. I was red faced for sure but I did take the time to wave to my new fans sitting in chairs all jaw dropping at the same time.

Once inside the first locked security door I was handed off to two guys to escort me up to my floor. They were treating me not with kid gloves but with Iron fists.

Thats my story and it's the truth, I ask you who was I endangering outside a sealed building on city property?

I must say at least the security guys don't wear Jack Boots.

Regards, Iwinder

While in not in favor of ripping our health care down, I would absolutely agree we should not pay for people's self destructive habits.

Overweight? Lose it before your knee operation so tax payers don't pay again in 2 years when you blow your new, tax payer funded knee out.

Alcoholic? Don't come take my money to pay for your new liver.

Smoking is no different.

It probably had nothing to do with the smoking and more to do with your health (being the reason you were there and on monitors and IV), insurance and liability reasons. That is my guess. If you leave when you aren't supposed to and have a heart attack or stroke on the corner off hospital property it would probably raise a lot of issues.

It's such an enormous disappointment to see what has happened to our society regarding the liberty of using tobacco and how the people have not stormed the city halls across the world to express outrage at being lied to and manipulated.

It's even more disappointing to continue to see those that remain smug in self-righteous indignation regarding smoking even though their beliefs are built on lies and propaganda that they refuse to accept because they get offended by a smell.

It's all about money and control. Big Pharma and anti-tobacco lobbyists have a monetary interest in promoting this insanity. The money has been channeled from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and supporters like Bloomberg into the lobbyists and anti-smoking groups such as the WHO. Check out "The LIes Behind the Smoking Bans" by Michael McFadden.

I continue to find it so ironic that on one of the most prominent conspiracy theory sites existing, that the giant anti-tobacco propaganda and lies isn't more thoroughly exposed and still filled with people whose brains have been so completely scrubbed clean of reason. Not surprising, but ironic.

We used to be a society where liberty ruled all. Where you either smoked or you didn't and it was welcomed everywhere as a fairly natural human thing to do. Those were much better times.

What actually constitutes a "self destructive habit"?
Serious question, my wife is overweight due to her thyroid being nuked and if they did not nuke it she was going to die.
Is that self destructive? We ingest chemicals daily in our food and water and air...is that self destructive?

Your treading on thin ice with your post in my opinion, Your talking cause and effect where a lot of issues are very hard to determine what the actual cause is.

I have suffered from a heart condition for more years than I care to mention, they figure it is due to childhood chicken pox or measles.
I was in line for a heart transplant 20 plus years ago but I was deemed "Not sick enough" now I am too sick for a transplant and I will never get one now.
So tell me this? Would you like a job on this panel that decides who dies and who lives? It seems to me you are the perfect candidate to play god and decision maker all in one.

Have you ever eaten Popcorn with real butter?......If so by your logic you deserve to die.
Ever eaten a fatty cut of meat
Ever Eaten Pizza
Ever Eaten a food product loaded with sugar
Ever Eaten french fries
Fast food
Milk shake
Meat Loaf with gravy

Your doomed my friend
See you in the afterlife wherever that is:-)
