Two armed gunmen seized control of a bus carrying more than 2 dozen passengers this morning. The initial demands from the gunmen were to be taken to the airport, and put on a plane. Three passengers, including the driver escaped shortly after the hijacking. Seven additional passengers were released by the gunmen. 19 passengers, 11 women, and eight men remained hostages. Demanding to go to Russia, the gunmen threatened to blow up the bus and passengers if their demands were not met.
Late Tuesday night, the hijackers released the last of the hostages and turned themselves over to police without a struggle. No one was injured.

Two armed men hijacked a bus carrying more than two dozen passengers early Wednesday, threatening to blow it up with explosives unless they were taken to the airport and put on a plane, police and government officials said.

Government officials would not confirm reports that the men, identified by sources in the Athens prosecutor's office as Albanians, were demanding $1.33 million. They said their initial demand was for a driver to take them to the airport.

The men seized control of the bus at 5:50 a.m. (0350GMT) about 10 miles east of the city center. The bus driver, a ticket inspector and a passenger escaped soon after, and seven other hostages were released about six hours into the standoff, officials said.

Officials said 19 others remained inside 11 women and eight men.

Another story of innocent civilians being used as pawns. The hijackers demanding to go to the airport and be put on a plane to Russia.
The question must be asked, why didn't they just take the bus to the airport, and get on a plane to Russia? They had to pay to get on the bus anyway.
What goes through the mind of a person to subject others, who are innocent bystanders, to this kind of horror?

Seems they have just released 3 more hostages, leaving 14 on the bus,
The armed men are said to be Albanian, 1 having a criminal record,

11 hours in to this drama now,

I think that these men dont really know what they are doing, they are in contact with local news stations, they had the numbers to these with them when they hijacked the bus,
They are also saying that all the hostages are being treated well, food and water has been offered to the hostages from the hostage takers,

So I think the longer this goes on the more relationship the hijackers will have with the hostages making it harder for them to do anything to harsh.

Releasing this many hostages (11) seems to be a good thing

I would agree with you. It does seem as though these hijackers are over their heads. I also agree with you that the release of 11 hostages bodes well for the outcome.
Let us pray that no one gets hurt.

How about the bus hijacking is just a front-end plot to do a 9/11 attack in Russia? Why do they want to go to Russia? Lot of questions....

I don't think they would be drawing attention to themselves with the bus hijacking if they planned on a larger attack on Russia.

ATHENS (Reuters) - Two suspected Albanians armed with rifles and dynamite hijacked a packed passenger bus in Athens and warned they would "light the fuse" if a Thursday deadline for payment of a $1 million ransom was not met.

As night fell, hours after the early morning drama began, the gunmen had freed 17 of an original 23 hostages.

But the releases came to an abrupt halt after one hijacker set an 8 a.m. (1 a.m. EST) Thursday deadline for payment of the ransom and vowed not to free any of the remaining hostages -- two men and four women -- until his demand was met.

It is over!!! Happily without blood

ATHENS, Greece - Two armed men who hijacked a bus and threatened to blow it up surrendered just after midnight Wednesday and released six of their remaining hostages.
All were shown on Greek television leaving the bus from the driver's door. Heavily armed police then searched the public bus, which had been hijacked about 18 hours before.

The reality is they are albians. I knew it was muslim's involved in this.

The ottoman empire pushed into eastern europe and converting the european's to islam. Now their decentants albian's have adopted the culture of Islam and at the end of it, You get kidnapping's, ransom which is supported in koran. againist christian's sincerly because muslim's believe that any thing that is not muslim is sub-class indiviudula that deserves terror.

If sept11 happened before the kosovo war, allbian's would have no hope for the US supporting them. Today they should their true color's.

Where are the people that state islam is not the cause of kidnappings? ransom? Why is that 9/10 times it muslims kidnapping? demanding ranson ?

The koran instructs Muslims to do thus:
'When you meet the unbelievers in the battlefield strike off their heads, and when you have laid them low, bind your captives firmly. Then grant them their freedom or take a ransom from them, until War shall lat down her burdens'

(Sura 47:4)

The reality is if mohammed never wrote this verse, then you wouldn't have this incient today.

1.) Take someone againist their will.
2.) Threat to kill them
3.) Demand money that is not theirs.

You look at the common Muslims terrorist and common bank robber not much of a difference.

No morality, ethic's, no desire to be good or do good. Now take o from good and u get god. Take d from devil and u get evil.

I really doubt it has anything to do with their religous beliefs. Regardless there are numerous reasons they did this. There are many homeless criminals in America and other countries around the world that commit crimes purposefully because of the number of years they get for their acts will earn them free place to sleep, eat, watch T.V. , free clothes that are washed for you, books to read, get to play chess, a chance to actually gain an education in some cases. Could be they just wanted a free ride out of life. After all if your someone with no hopes for life but don't want to suffer in the streets, then prison is the place for you
And hey you can actually earn like 35 cents an hour producing merchandise that the prison will sell for a very high profit. Wow, who would not want to go to prison
