Pet dog saves drowning baby

The 18-month-old girl was fished out of the dam at the farm property at Bowenvale, near the central Victorian town of Maryborough, about midday yesterday after the family's border collie raised the alarm.

The dog alerted the toddler's mother to the emergency by running back and forth between the house and the dam and barking, said an ambulance officer who arrived at the scene soon afterwards.

"I have been in the job for 20 years and this is one out of the box," said Greg Smith, the officer in charge of the Maryborough ambulance station, who attended to the emergency with his paramedic partner, Ian Taylor.

The girl was recovering in a stable condition at the Bendigo Hospital today.

Having had dogs and cats all my life, this 'bond' doesn't surprise me.

Nah i've heard heaps of stories about animals saving people, especially their owners... no big suprise, but interesting none the less...

I did read one amusing story about a guy in turkey who had a heart attack while walking his dog... the dog ended up signing the guys death warrant by viciously 'protecting' his master from any paramedics who tried to treat him...
