All the "hopefully they are friendly stuff" comes from the fact that we couldn't make it to them. So they must be smarter then us. SCIFI has shown us multiple possibilities tho. Take district 9... They weren't too much more advanced then us, but still made the trip. More of a Noah's arc type voyage, rather then a startrek one. Where they show up coasting on fumes and almost out of food.

I'm not sure capitalism works with space travel. It's too expensive with little or no return on your investment.... at least in the early to mid stages. So assuming they are all star trekesque socialists. Me might have a half A$$ shot they are peaceful.

LMAO!!! Can you imagaine a highly advanced race of communist, socialist athiest aliens showing up? The GOP would wanna nuke them instantly! Lol

I think (they) are smart enough to avoid us...and I think they have technology to view what is happening on our planet...without actually having to be here with us. I think they know how messed up certain parts of humanity are and they do not want to be around us. I also think they do not trust most of us.

I think it's an issue of the ones close enough to hear from arnt on our technelogical level. While the ones still using radio waves arnt close enough to hear us yet... I mean we can only even expect for those within 40 light years to have picked up our signals and began trying to send there's our way.

I think there are absolutely races colonizing star systems. Just maybe they arnt very close.

Why is everyone so certain that If they came here and If they were friendly that they would come straight to us . Be a big kick in the butt if they brushed us aside and communicated with dolphins for instance . Hey flipper , have the 2 legs been looking after the planet . Nope . Add in whatever you think might happen next HERE .

Makes no difference if their friendly or not. Within 5 minutes factions will develop within society and humanity will war with each other over whether the aliens are friendly or not.

Sides will be chosen!

Our leaders are not friendly, those who are the face of our planet. But the majority of people, when not influenced by modern day trappings, are friendly.

On a personal level I do hope ETs are friendly if we meet them. From fear? Not really, I don't fear dying or an attack. From a selfish point of view? Even altruism can be described as a selfish motivation so possibly I'm selfish... but I want them to be friendly because that is positive.

You're right though, the human race as a whole is despicable.

Imagine the scenario the other way round and that WE arrived and contacted aliens on another planet....

All smiles and kindness, openness and honesty......NOT!

Behind the smile the gogs whir for secret agendas.

All life is the same. Survival at any cost and power over as much as possible by any means to achieve it.

Even Spielberg's "ET" nearly killed a boy in it's selfish endeavours to leave our ball of dirt.

My two thoughts:

1. I think we'd actually play nice (at first, anyway) if (a) it was obvious the other species was sentient and (b) it was clear they were not hostile.

2. Great technological developments often happen during times of war. "I hope they're friendly," isn't my personal peeve, but I have a similar one, which is "clearly their advanced technology means they have learned to live in peace/they are morally ascended!" Yeah, more likely they built warp drives during one of their many world wars.

CONTACT IN THE DESERT 2014 Linda Moulton Howe UFO ALIEN Documentary

They've always been here, and everywhere. Some are Benevolent and Waking us so we can escape lower levels by achieving Higher Mind, Self Control and Kindness. But there are always the negative slavers out and about too including the ones in power positions on earth.

I actually hope they're malevolent and outnumber us 10 to 1 surrounding the planet, blowing up the moon & nuking us from orbit...

Leave no trace of this rotten virus we call "humanity".

Too much?

I spend every waking moment praying for this to happen. Hell, It doesn't even have to be aliens, I just wish we were all gone already.

I agree with the OP completely...we suck. But I'll go a bit further in saying that I don't think we have it within ourselves to grow any better. I personally believe we have only gotten worse over history...not better. Forget for a moment all the crap we do to the planet and each other. Look instead at the human creature...inside. We are a sniveling, snot-nosed punk that hates anything that is not us. However, we are intelligent enough to dominate all the other creatures of the world and with enough technology to make ourselves feel OK about it. Yup...we are like rats with nuclear weapons.

With any luck, any other life in the universe will stay far away from us.

Everyone hopes that the aliens will be friendly; I doubt that will be the case.

For starters, we can't even get along with each other. Why would any aliens want to meet with a group of savages?

Secondly, unless this is something like a scientific study, and the aliens are here to observe, they are most likely here to determine if:
1. We have something that they want.
2. We are a potential threat to them (much in the same way we keep close tabs on our own enemies).
3. We are easy enough to be picked off.
4. We're edible or not (hey, it's a logical reason).

Finally, even if there were peaceful aliens, God help them should any of the armed forces get ahold of one; they'd more than likely be dissected, or locked away.

With the crap food, toxins, narcotics, alcohol we put in ourselves, they would put us in the garbage chute..

'We hope they are friendly.' Bah. We hope they don't kill us. All. Quickly.

I think we will get what we deserve. I hope humanity collectively evolves to a point where we are allowed to participate in whatever the 'Gathering of all neighboring cultures' is called. I hope we live long enough to evolve.

The question remains...evolve into what?

"We hope they don't kill us." is exactly why we hope they're not aggressive. Not out of wanting to get along but rather self preservation.

Peace

Yes. I wonder if we are not the best thing for the Earth. An evolved species would find a way to measure that.

I think of humanity as more of a bacterium. Just like E. coli we consume our planet and release noxious gases in the process.
