Albinos Murdered for Body Parts in Africa

A word of caution. As indicated by the title, discussion of the topic of this thread necessarily includes sometimes graphic descriptions of gruesome crimes.

Muti (also muthi), from the Zulu word for 'tree,' is a term for traditional African magical medicine practices in many countries in the south of Africa. Shamans or witch doctors who practice muti often sell remedies that are primarily a mixture of herbs but which might also include material from animals such as fat, skin, blood and bones.

I've come across stories here and there of particularly shocking cases of people having been killed in 'muti murders' but I was unaware of the spate of murders and vicious mutilations of albinos in recent years until I came across an article this morning in my feed.

The East African country of Tanzania has reportedly banned witch doctors in an effort to prevent further witchcraft-related murders of albinos.

According to a story reported by Agence France-Presse, “The ban follows the kidnapping last month of a four-year-old girl by men armed with machetes, who took her from her home in the northern Mwanza region. Police have since arrested 15 people, including the girl’s father and two uncles, but she remains missing. ‘These so-called witches bear responsibility for the attacks against albinos,’ interior ministry spokesman Isaac Nantanga told AFP Wednesday.

In Tanzania and Burundi at least 50 albinos have been murdered for their body parts in recent years according to a 2010 Red Cross report. In November 2009, four people were arrested and sentenced to death in northern Tanzania for killing an albino man to harvest his body parts.

A month earlier, albino hunters beheaded a 10-year-old boy and hacked off his leg. In May of last year two witch doctors were arrested in connection with the death of an albino woman who was murdered for her body parts.

Doing a bit of web searching, I found many many more stories of albinos being targeted by nefarious practitioners of "bad muti" who claim that they can bring their clients wealth, success — and even election victory — when the tissues of albinos are combined with other secret ingredients. A May, 2014 article from Sky News describes yet another murder:

Munghu Lugata, 40, was killed after attackers hacked off her left leg above the knee and chopped off three fingers on Monday, Under The Same Sun, a group that campaigns for the rights of albinos, said on Wednesday.

Charles Mkumbo, police chief of the Simiyu region in northwestern Tanzania, said a man and a woman, Gudawa Yalema and Shiwa Masalu, had been arrested.

'Her grossly mutilated body was discovered outside of her home by her own niece,' the group said, adding that more than 70 albinos have been killed since 2000, with a similar number suffering violent attacks.

It seems unlikely that any new law will do much to curtail these heinous crimes as long as the people of these countries hold onto ancient superstitious beliefs.

The genocide of Albinos across Africa has been prevalent for quite a while now.

It's like something out of a horror movie. Story after story of victims — many if not most children — butchered alive by small groups wielding machetes and knives. There are quite a few pictures of survivors who are missing appendages, fingers, pieces of skin, etc. Terrible, disturbing stuff.

There are occasional stories of South American gangs killing people to make wrinkle cream or Chinese women murdered to become ghost brides but the attacks on albinos have reached epidemic proportions.

Albinos are bad genes. This is just inevitable. You know what is good? Get rid of all the mad scientists corrupting humans genes. There is a reason why Africa will never be free from cannibalism and remain controlled by the West. Where do you guys think HIV came from? Why does Ebola exists in Africa?

Not all cultures are created equal. The primitive tribal cultures of Africa are keeping it in the state it's in today. Not even superimposing other religions on it has helped. The tribal culture has shown through helping to result in the violent conflicts we see between the world religions and the horrible mutilations and atrocities the world witnesses every day.

The colonial powers imposed a semblance of some order for a time. Now the Chinese seem to be ready to take a crack at it. We'll see if they have much success.
