Egypt student gets 3-year jail term for atheism

An Egyptian court has sentenced a student to three years in jail for announcing on Facebook that he is an atheist and for insulting Islam, his lawyer said Sunday.

Abdel Nabi said his client's father had testified against his son, charging that he "was embracing extremist ideas against Islam".

Banna's name had appeared in a list of known atheists in a local daily after which his neighbours harassed him, said Ishaq Ibrahim, a researcher on religion and beliefs at the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights.

When Banna went to file a complaint against them at a police station, he was accused of insulting Islam and arrested, said Ibrahim, who has been tracking Banna's case.

Banna has been in custody since November.

In December 2012, a 27-year-old blogger, Alber Saber, was sentenced to three years in jail on charges of blasphemy.

And last June, a Coptic Christian man was sentenced to six years in jail for insulting Islam.

The authorities have stepped up measures, including organising workshops, to counter atheism.

We have been for a long time. Even in America, several states have laws on the books preventing atheists from holding public office. Freedom of religion, but not freedom from religion. Unelectable Atheists...

Atheism is the MOST maligned, persecuted and hated group of all times! Atheists were persecuted and murdered in Rome before Jesus was twinkle is his "father's" eye! Any outspoken atheist was surely put to death in any of the Tribes of Israel.

Well Egypt got what they wanted after all they did vote the person who overtook their nation by way of a military coup into office. This guy will become just another brutal dictator just like Mubarak.

I read a story a while back about a guy who kept his atheism to himself for years, because he was afraid his family would send him off to one of those militant Xtian camps, so they could torture...er...love him back to Jesus.

In all fairness to extremist Islam. They are consistent. They hate anyone who doesn't embrace their doctrine, equally. Xtian, Jew, Atheist, makes no difference to them.

Well now Egypt blew it too. They threw a counter revolution to get rid of the Sharia Brotherhood that was installed during their big revolution and blamed Obama and Hillary, outlawed the Brotherhood and sent arrest notices to Obama.

Now, I'd really and truly like to see moderate, mixed faith and belief, middle eastern countries, with level heads and freedoms, and equality, modern and civilized, and armed and able to defend themselves. I'm still looking for one.

Egypt was getting hero mode for dealing with the terrorists for a time, but guess that was all just another show and they're still under a dictatorship? How fantastic.

Islam tolerates nothing that isn't Islam. When the Muslims conquered India, they were absolutely brutal to the native populations, even worse than they were to Christians and Jews. Christians and Jews were treated badly as dhimmis, but the natives of India weren't even given that status initially because they were considered completely heathen.

You need to give up with this delusion that they will somehow recognize this idea that you are their allies in this struggle against the almighty Judeo-Christian Zionist Oppressor Western Imperialist Machine and give you your freedom at the end of it. They will turn on you. You will submit to Islam or you will die.

I am really against this. But it sounds like a law that was enacted to minimize societal flareups based on religion..

You do know history proves you wrong. Islam does accept other faiths. During the middle ages when Christianity was taking over the world Jews stayed with the Muslims for protection from the Christians. In fact when Christians took back Spain all the Jews left with the Muslims. Even now there are Muslim nations that has no problem with other religions. Iran has a large population of Jews these Jews even refused the bribe Israel offered them to move to Israel they told Israel our faith isn't for sale. Also the you will submit to Islam is nothing but propaganda.
