The White House says this is just the first part of the U.S. response to the Sony incident.
Obama said he had determined North Korea was behind the Sony hack and that the country poses a "continuing threat to the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States."
Among the agencies targeted by the new sanctions Friday was the Reconnaissance General Bureau, an intelligence agency the U.S. said was responsible for "major cyber operations" in North Korea.
The new sanctions also target officials at North Korea's Mining Development Trading Corporation, which the U.S. says is responsible for the country's arms dealing and weapons export business.
Seven officials who represent North Korea's arms dealing trade in Africa, Iran, Russia and Syria were designated by the U.S. Treasury as subject to the new economic sanctions.

So let's understand what just happened.
According to Obama, it took the N. Koreans hacking Sony to figure out they were up to no good, and to justify sanctions against the Reconnaissance General Bureau and their Mining Development Trading Corporation, which the U.S. says is responsible for the country's arms dealing and weapons export business.
WTF?
Is this what the U.S. leadership has come to? We "sanction" N. Korea because they exposed some embarrassing emails about our entertainment industry and we wouldn't have figured out they're dealing arms to our enemies otherwise?

The first part? What does that mean? And where's the proof of NK being guilty of these accusations other than the WH saying "Because we say so" and just moving ahead?
Peace

Also, what is the GOVT. doing in this mess anyways? SONY is a corporation...
If Sony was a US corporation, it might make some sense.
If anything, Japan should be doing the sanctions.

The US is using false pretenses to attack liberties and set up regime changes?
Shocking and unexpected..
I feel some serious deja vu.

SONY was founded by the Rockerfellas and stands for Standard Oil New York, didn't you know this?

CNN link sends us to the homepage of CNN Jude, just thought you might like to know.
As for sanctions...
I didn't know DPRK had trade relations with anyone who the U.S can influence to cause a problem for Pyongyang...
China won't stop trade relations with them because of U.S sanctions...
Iran are being sanctioned by the U.S as well so they won't stop being partners with DPRK.
Same goes for Russia...
I thought sanctions were all about Allies withholding trade for another Allies sake...
Doesn't seem that any of DPRK's trade links are Allies of the U.S.
Aside from all of that, as Jude said, where is the proof?
The only reason they suspected NK was on the basis of South Korean testimony because of the Seoul Hacks last year...
& the DPRK denied that as well.
Strange decision to be honest.
