Good to know Mr. Z Beeblebrox, I assumed all rockets would have a consistent trail as they burn fuel.

Cruise missiles are slow, easy targets. By using a turbojet instead of a rocket motor they increase the range exponentially, as well as making it harder to detect visually. That makes it more survivable, with a better chance of reaching its target.
