The usgs is showing a 6.8 and a 6.9 about 26 seconds apart. I'm assuming it's just some glitch though. It definitely threw me off when I saw that.

That is of course only 192 miles from that place in Japan that has very wobbly things that are highly radioactive.

The agency said a tsunami of up to one meter (3.3 feet) was forecast to hit the coast of Iwate at around 8:30 am local time (2330 GMT Monday

so what happened?

A 20-centimeter wave caused by the quake was observed at Kuji port in Iwate roughly an hour after the quake, while a 10-cm wave was observed in Miyako, Iwate, before the tsunami advisory was lifted later in the morning, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

"This quake is an aftershock of the 2011 quake that hit the Tohoku region," Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) seismologist Yasuhiro Yoshida told reporters.

and

Tohoku Electric Power Co (TEPCO), which operates the Onagawa and Higashidori nuclear plants in nearby Miyagi and Aomori prefectures, said it saw no irregularities at the facilities after the quake. All 48 of Japan's nuclear reactors remain offline after the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami, which triggered the Fukushima nuclear disaster. A spokesman for TEPCO, the operator of the Fukushima Daiichi and Fukushima Daini nuclear plants, said no irregularities were recorded. The quake was felt only weakly in the area, he said. Unlisted Japan Nuclear Fuel also said there were no irregularities recorded at its nuclear fuel reprocessing facility or other plants in Aomori.

UPDATED Japan page now corrected for the problems below.

Looks as if IRIS is down at present.....checking.... See below

OMG they have changed the web address that I use of all the seismo stations! I now have days of work to update the program, and all my web pages. Thanks IRIS for doing this without consulting me!!!!

Looks as if it happened 2 days ago.

Looks as if what they have done is to remove the facility that existed to show Today, Yesterday or the day beofre using plot_f instead of webicorder_f which means that all my pages where I show the today, yesterday and day before options are now useless as WordPress does not allow me to program the page so I can't calculate the required dates on the fly.

One has to wonder why these organisations are continually removing access bit by bit. (Well no I don't wonder or I would not be on a conspiracy theory site!)

Bar stewards is all I have to say about it.

The good news on the program is that it is only my version that is affected. Pro and Standard versions look from the code as if the seismograms in the View Webicorder part of the program should still work. (Can someone confirm that?)

certainly a lot of 6's lately

Not sure about these being aftershocks of the M9 of 2011 like the scientist said, they are 155km north of the 2011 event. started with a 6.7 and 3 other sixes since

this is a image grab from yesterday off the Hypocenter map, 4 main islands, 7 days,

cluster looks bigger today

going into NIED today to get the data and do my own map.

Took a bit of time but got there in the end.

I think the use of Mw by the main Networks skewed things a bit
Although the 6's that were aftershocks were quite big in size, when you see the ML readings and that the first one was almost a M7.0 then it makes sense, regardless these are all aftershocks of the 6.9ML
whether the 6.9 is an aftershock of the M9 of 2011 is debatable.
If you took that stance globally, every earthquake would be an aftershock of one previously, back hundreds of years
I think seismologist Yasuhiro Yoshida was being simplistic ABC News

link to interactive map shown in image above

I have started a new Japan page on Blogger, in the new 2015 Flipcard style, its the only way I can post 233 icons on one map and then link it here, now that Google have withdrawn their KMZ mapping facilities.
Its probably a good move anyway, Japan on Wordpress only got 250 views in 2 years, whereas Japan on Blogger has already got 75 views in 24 hrs (before I even posted the link here now)
It may take a bit of getting used to, using the slider to bring up the background map behind the icons, but heck its the best option of all the mapping systems I have tested so far.
Working on replicating the March 2011 M9 series on Blogger now.
