Today s the 1 year anniversary of the 6.23ML Alfredton/Eketahuna, Wairarapa NZ quake.
No one was killed.

I put a lot of work into this page last year, only to find in Nov 2014 that Google is going to cancel/wipe all interactive maps created on Classic Maps from February 2015,

So enjoy them while they are there.
To replace the maps, I'm doing a few animations, using the lollipop icons I trialed late last year.
here is the first one , the first 24hrs. The bulk of the aftershocks were within the first 3 days, which is quite normal.

here is a single gif of the whole years events since 20 January 2014, 4,553 of them incl. the main shock, which will be the last image in the next animation.

For reference the distance between Eketahuna and Alfredton is 13.53 km, so as you can see, quite a constrained aftershock series.
edit on 01000000181815 by muzzy because: redid the whole animation to add the scale 2km

The San Andreas is having a small hiccup. Mag 4.4

The focal mechanism shows quite a bit of upward thrust..strange for a strike-slip fault. There still must be some measure of compressional stress.

Here is a seismogram of the shaking:

I believe that occurred on the Pine Rock fault zone, if you will look closer. That's close enough to the San Andreas though, about a mere 5 km or so away. Small aftershock occurred just now not far from there.

Thanks TA. All I can find regarding the Pine Rock fault is that it is thought to be less than 130,000 years old, and only 21.3kms long. That aftershock was located SE of the southern terminus of the Pine Rock fault, but at the same depth.

Off topic; Congratulations on writing a book. That you are enjoying sales success is even more impressive. Terrific accomplishment! Wherever did you find the time?

edit: some more images from data I had from 2012

The 2012 5.3 was "foreshocked" by 18 quakes in the 23 days prior M1.0-M3.0

so this 4.4 may be just a foreshock, as it didn't have any foreshocks, if you know what I mean

On the morning of Wednesday January 21, Mexico’s Colima volcano exploded, sending over 4km of ash into the air. Over five minutes of dramatic natural activity is condensed into this time-lapse recording, which documents the rush of huge plumes towards the skies in an otherwise calm environment. I needed a break from animating Eketahuna, so had a look at the area you mentioned.
Holy Maloney I hadn't realised how much was going on there.
had only posted before about the description UseleSGS is giving it, " its no where near Lakeview, Oregon its in Nevada etc"

So lets call it what it is
Bald Mountain, Nevada.

in a 10km radius from the centre Lat/Long 41.872,-119.634

since 12/07/2014
