With a joint desire to counterbalance US global dominance, China and Russia have agreed to conduct joint military exercises starting next year. The drills will take place in China territory, but not many other details are known at this time. The recent settling of the last border disputes between the two countries which led to violent clashes in the 60's and 70's have helped contribute to favorable relations that have reached unparalled heights.

apnews.myway.com
By JOE McDONALD, BEIJING (AP)- The announcement came during a visit to Beijing by Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov, who was expected to discuss expanding the Kremlin's multibillion-dollar annual arms sales to China.

"We want ... to promote the development of the two countries' strategic collaborative relationship in order to safeguard and promote regional and world peace," CNS quoted Hu as telling Ivanov.

Russia is a key supplier for the Chinese military's effort to modernize its arsenal and back up frequent threats to invade Taiwan, the self-ruled island that Beijing claims as its territory.

China and Russia have been strengthening ties now for over a decade. With the US and EU banning arms sales to China since 1989, it is no surprise that China turned to Russia for Su-27's and other high level equipment. But this announcement of joint military exercises is likely to raise some serious concerns for the powers that be.

Yes, both Russia and China are peeved of with US's neo-imperialism. Further, they are Iran's friends. It is not a very good idea to anger two countries who have hundreds of nuclear weapons pointed at you.

OK, here we go now.
This could be quite disturbing. I know it would be quite a fight if it came to that.
I once heard you could march the Chinese into the ocean in a line and it would never end. Their manpower alone is frightening. And with Russia's nukes, Lord help us.

I'm glad to see these joint war games. Maybe someone in the American power structure will get the hint that there might be another power in the world that America can not bully.

China will do well with Russia if they can get over or past their old animosities. Russia has enormous natural resources, China has enormous productivity potential and Taiwan (yes) has enormous financial resources ( ATS thread re: China invade Taiwan)

Taiwan, China and Russia- good counter to EU and Imperial America (Canada, US, Mexico).

Now each group has: finances, labor, resources and military potential. EU will have to develop its military, no more 'let the Americans do it' attitude.

Where does this leave Japan and So. Korea? They must join China/Russia. Neither country is going to want to be the first line for anyone else (America) against overwhelming opposition.

china and russia can be the shoe,
the EU can be the little top hat
and i think the "imperial America" should be the little car...
switzerland can be the bank...
as long as we have parkplace and broadway...
they gotta pay... gotta pay... gotta pay...

(by the way, if you want to know how to anger a canadian... just tell them they are part of the imperial America...EH)

Japan and S Korea teaming up with China
Not going to happen anytime in the near future. Japan starting to build up its "Defense force" to counter powers like China and N Korea in that area of the world.

China might be trying to counter the US but other countries are trying to counter China at the same time.

Well said... Only a few countries are and will remain on the 'other side' of world power...

I am amazed that some people are looking forward to two communist countries, yes Russia is still communist or will announce so in the not so distant future, as the saviours of the world..... Ironic that these same "saviours" some people are looking up to have been, and in many instances still have demonstrated the worse crimes against their own people and others....

I want to see which country does the U.S. administration say it's theirs as what China is doing with Taiwan, denying Taiwan it's own independance when China has no right over Taiwan whatsoever...or what it did to Tibet... Yet, by what I see some people look towards the Chinese and Russian government to have power over their life....

China and Russia have for quite some time worked on getting together to wrestle against the U.S. and the rest of the western non-communist, non-socialist countries. Their goal have been clear to some people for a long time now. I still remember a few months ago even some members in this same forum said that Russia and China would not get together, and much less to fight in any form against the U.S. Slowly, but surely they are being proven wrong by the actions of, not only these two countries, but others as well.

Muaddib look at the ATS thread I linked above- there won't be any Taiwan invasion, this is all smoke and propaganda.

ShadowXIX China/Japan/S Korea- you think not?

Remember WW II? 'Greater East Asia Co-prosperity Sphere'

It'll be different this time around but it will happen. Japan will not be marginalized or become America's '1st line of defense.'

Laugh now- all tigers run in the same pack.

JoeDoaks, you cant compare our Geo-Political atmosphere with that of the WW2 era(allthough you could possibly make a case for a post WW1 parallel). Japan is a close US ally now as is South Korea. Japan is in the top 5 in military spending, South Korea has a standing army of about a million troops give or take. And I believe we are all forgetting about India, now they are a big wildcard in all this. What is thier relations with Russia, China and the USA now? They may be a little peeved at the USA alliance with Pakistan right now but from what I've been hearing is that the two countries(US and India) are growing closer by the day. Does the USA sell any weapons to India? I know Russia does.(but then again Russia will sell weapons to anyone)

Forget Japan and South Korea...they never likede either Russia or China..what does this mean for India...India-Russia ties still strong,Indo-US ties improving exponentially(military exercises),US rewarding Pakistan with Non-NATO ally Status(India sore), India and China have recently settled major border disputes via dialogue and promise to further improve relations, its all very confusing to me..seems like Poker Game..whos got what up their sleeve?

Neo-imperialism? Aight....

As to the idea of hundred's of nuclear weapons pointing at 'us,' seems to me that those thousands of nuclear tipped missiles were pointing at 'us' for quite sometime. Cold War ring a bell? Whats the difference now verses then? Seems to me that a nuke-tipped missile pointing at me is irrelevant, especially since the long standing doctrine of M.A.D. is still in play, is it not? Personally, its better to be 'peeved' off then 'peeved on'....simply put, I guess Russia and China will have to be and stay peeved, eh?

The 3rd world war is around the corner and the world shall be vaporized except for the people living in the Amazon and the Congo. All because the US,Russia and China wants to rule the world..Nuclear holicust is the only way to solve the worlds problems.

I agree with you. Missle's have been pointing at us for a long time now. There is still a question in my mind though -
I believe that the media only reports what it should or what it is allowed to report. I think that at times some things leak through, however it has been "announced" so to speak that they will be in war games together so I believe that it definately has significance; but how much?

-either they want people to be a little on edge
-we will be nuked then invaded
-Russia and China are showing themselves or their power to everyone involved; middle east, US, etc. and or could be waiting for a "go ahead" or opportunity.
-or nothing; nada they just maybe would rather play together than to play with us.

I personally believe that it could be a little of everything above - well, nuked and invaded is a little off, hopefully. There have been suspiscions that the year 2004 will be the last "peaceful" year for Americans; we will soon find out. We really can't do anything about it though, just pray.

Everyone has been calling to arms in the past decade, and it's obvious the U.S. would rather not have it's public or anyone knowing what they have up their sleeve. Russia and China are doing this in the situation that they have to be allies to defend their land or conquest and take more. Either way, i doubt the US will be fighting on the same terms as either country so we have to watch out for that. At least they won't get it wrong like those dumb****** that killed that football player and the men with him. They waived a bunch of times and the stupid soldiers that they were taunting them. That's why I'd rather fight on my own then with some of those dumbos.

for those here, who think wars are "cool":
