Possible ship hijacking?

The SBS news just put up a breaking bulletin saying reports were coming in a large passenger liner was sending a distress signally suggesting armed men were aboard.

A ship carrying hundreds of passengers near the island of Corfu has issued a distress call because of armed people on board, according to the Greek shipping ministry.
Several reports say the vessel, a Moldovan cargo ship last tracked near the tiny island of Othonoi, northwest of Corfu, is carrying 700 passengers.
Greek state television has reported that 'illegal immigrants' are involved in the situation on the ship, while other news sources say all 700 passengers are 'undocumented migrants'.

This seems very strange and is being reported on all major news outlets. What is going on with the world at the moment? What is the goal here?

Sounds like it could be a load of illegals on board-maybe the armed people are the traffickers?

Something smells fishy.. Captain takes on illegals, carrying everything they own of value, then the ship just happens to get hijacked and 700 people get robbed. Hmmmm. Wonder if the Captain and some of the crew will get "kidnapped" and never seen again.

The reports also say that there is a ransom involved and they are baffled by it because nobody is going to pay a ransom for illegals. Must be something else on that ship that the media do NOT know about that is valuable to the hijackers/pirates.

Typically when this is done, the cargo is very well known to those that are taking the ship. They usually have someone on the inside that has tipped them to the manifest and know what they are looking for.

Could be the cargo, or I guess it could be that one or more of the illegals is of some importance?

Another oddity about this story is that it is being reported that it is a passenger who sent the distress signal. I wonder if this is a case of crying wolf just to see what happens. Could be that one of the illegals threatened another with a weapon and that one sent a call in saying there was someone threatening them.

Guess we will find out more soon enough!

Without meaning to make light of this, it sounds like it should be a new Clive Cussler novel. The way this is being reported has Dirk Pitt all over it!

HUGE Clive Cussler fan here.....but really not a fan of any of his non Dirk Pitt novels....I just don't like his other main characters he throws in.

so it seems they were asking for food and not in danger.

inglesi Piers Scholfield Coastguard told us Greek frigate captain communicated with #BlueSkyM who said not in danger - just asked for food supplies.

I don't think I will ever understand the immigrants on ships thing. I mean, they CHOSE to get on the ship to leave and knew they were getting on, yet they don't prepare for it or anything? Seriously? I may sound insensitive, out of ignorance I guess, but why they hell would you board a ship without being prepared for it? It isn't like 700 of them just happened to show up at the same time. It was obviously planned. Are they just that stupid and expecting a handout at whatever country they happen to land in?

Wish I could travel the world on someone else's dime....

Moldova is a little country, but it is in a precarious situation, in March, the UN warned that Russia would "run into" Moldova.
