That's correct- they would've never made it over. They were most likely climbing and turning to set up passage through the storms based on observations from their weather radar.

This pilot went in the zone!
Anything outside the norm was safer?
Wow...
Hands down.. he/she..
Did their absolute best to keep them alive..
And until.. the crash is recovered ...
Someone may still be alive...

But hey.. I'm just a firefighter/AARF .....
Extremes mean weired things!...

Not only is it a rapid expansion issue but there are also cultural factors that at times undermine proven operation concepts like CRM.

Yeah. CRM issues have been a huge issue, and scary as hell to read about.

G forces are very subjective . 500 mph to zero in .001 second is 27,000 gs .500 to zero in .01 seconds is 2272 gs . Whereas 500 mph to zero in .1 of a second is 227 gs . Hopefully my numbers are correct .

I just read a news website that mentioned that the Air Asia FaceBook page had changed its logo colour from red to grey..

Is there a hidden significance in this?

Perhaps there should be a rule for commercial airline pilots...

"There can be only ONE Sully Sullenberger" *lightning flash*

In all seriousness though, there have been too many incidents like this of late, and I really wonder what is at the root of them.

For those of us not specifically trained in air lingo, would you mind explaining CRM to us a little... I feel like I should follow that with the words uncle Zaphod, air magister and magos of all things that fly?

They are, but it makes it really hard on equipment. We used to have glass sensors on the nose and main landing gear well. If they broke it ejected an ELT.

I didn't hear anything about wreckage in that video ...

Crew Resource Management. After the KLM-Pan Am crash crews were trained that any one of them could speak up and be listened to (one of the causes of Tenerife was the KLM first officer's fear of speaking up).

The problem in Asia is hierarchy. Experienced captains are the final word. Period. Full stop.

It says here(same news source) that wreckage has reportedly been found, about halfway down the page: rt.com...

Apparently there's a prophecy that predicted this...Your guess is likely as good as mine or anyone else in this forum...

i like what you are saying. accurate. nice job man =) i also considered icing of the pitot tubes like the air france aircraft. but then the pilots would have to be poorly trained to make the same mistake. could have happened just gotta wait and see if they find wreckage.

To build on what Zaph said, United 232 is seen as one of the shining examples of outstanding CRM in action if you know anything about that flight.

The STORMS topped out at 53,000 not the flight.

That is severe... wow!
The pilot was sent into a ( pardon my saying ) a death zone.. there was no choice..
It should have been a given..
Go wide... or don't go?
