N. Korea's "internet" is probably pretty small -- I'd wager that only a handful of people in the government are allowed to even access it.

So, keeping a few thousand government officials from using the internet...

That's about it, mostly Government we are told. The Washington Post headline can only be interpreted as mockingly hilarious,

'North Korea’s Internet is going suspiciously haywire' which in the reading equates to, 'Intense instability' and it's suspicious because outages there are usually isolated pockets not a total offline.

My understanding is that a DDOS attack on N. Korea's one internet supplier from China began Friday. It wasn't large enough to overwhelm them, but they were struggling to stay up with all the traffic being sent at them. Finally the traffic increased and they went down today.

It would be a surprise if it wasn't the US sending a message to Kim that his whole country can be cut of the Net very easily. They don't have the resources to develop the infrastructure to diversify their connection enough to stop the US from taking them off the Net in the near term.

China's response will be interesting. It is their company that is getting overwhelmed and thus cutting off N. Korea. I'd be surprised if they didn't rush in to help this company stay online in the future. They do have the resources to stop most DDOS attacks if they really want to.

As stated earlier who knows who would do such a thing.

I would like to add "Who cares"

If you want to have an impact, drop a million flash drives with copies of 'The Interview'. That would cause the powers-that-be more grief than any kind of cyber retaliation.

Maybe Norrth Korea took itself offline.

This could be a defensive move on the part of N. Korea

The ultimate firewall - to keep people out !

None of the public there has a computer to stick a flash drive into. And one new enough to have a USB port? good luck.

Nobody's going to hurt them by shutting down their little ISP, anyway. They don't have a "Sony", and they don't use computers to run power grids, militarily, or in any of the significant ways we do. I bet only a handful have email.

This is not that big a deal to them. Probably will lead to another little hissy fit, and maybe they will try to import some more "talent" to get us back. Unfortunately it's not a fair arena to play in. We really can be harmed.

I think the cyber war is in full progress, NK is completely down and Comcast and Verizon are reporting large scale internet outages, mostly along the east and west coasts.
Hold onto your hats folks.

Yes, I was trying to reply to sosobad at the time, and all the while there are glitches here too tonight. That's why I added the post number in edit previously. I need to go and look at ATS's service now!

Mainstream is reporting this now.

The US has said 'no comment'.

So honestly I am LOVING this.

Their entire internet knocked OFFLINE.

LOL.

Kinda scary at the same time.

Because if it was us ?

That means our government does have the internet 'kill switch'.

You and me both friend. Seems like Kimmy got his bit of Karma for using the GoP to take out Sony. Either U.S or someone hired / supported by. Either way, suck it Kim!
