Secondly how on earth do you get a post removed in a thread about pickups? got to be a first.

Lol I was thinking the same thing. My imagination is racing.

Building a for fun project now, SG Jr, routed for HB, I was going to go with a P90/humbucker size GFS brand. I like the raw edge of singles.

Is it your first time with GFS? I had a bad batch once, just wanted to know if you had too.

I'm not so much in SCs anymore... I do classical rock (bordering techno), HBs hold better distortion and, by extension, effects.

Two thoughts,

Firstly as others said that although this is pretty cool is it able to compete with real pickups or will it sound all digital and fake.

Secondly how on earth do you get a post removed in a thread about pickups? got to be a first.

Got banned.

ALL posts removed.

We had a troll in our midst.

Probably played a Kazoo anyway.

Peace

Well, let the party carry on.

Any idea what will be the tone of a printed p/u?

I hope it has good basses. I find Dimarzio's tonal scheme perfect, and so far, only a few p/us have reached it. Dimarzio is what Deff Leppard used.

The way I read this it's like printed circuit boards, which do not take long to do. They are printed coils that are stacked together, electrically they'd be the same as a wound pickup. I think the real advantage is that they are completely uniform and they have gotten the magnets fields to be uniform by making them super magnetic and then demagnetizing in just the right way so that the field mimics that of specific pickups that they have profiled.

Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

;-P

Heya... the title is a bit misleading.... still coils after all...

Fluence is based on the notion that coils can be applied rather than wound. Like traces on a circuit board, concentric spirals of “coil” can be printed.

Anyways... all i read is marketing hype n spin

All i see are more components (48 x 2 layers!!) , each with their own characteristics, quality control issues, and interconnections/interdependency.

How to control the variations in the magnets’ properties? Supercharge the magnets, and then de-magnetize them in a controlled way.
... isnt that how most magnets are made anyway? I wonder what the 'controlled way' is.... (sitting in the suppliers warehouse for a month?)

players could access a switch allowing them to change profiles on the fly
... what? like a pickup selector? or a modelling/effects footswitch?

By starting with a perfectly flat pickup, and then filtering some frequencies while boosting others
... wow a tone control system. how new.

As mentioned, hum has been eliminated, even from single-coil pickups. The usual method of creating hum-free single-coil pickups—“stacking” two coils—inevitably causes high-end loss. But Fluence can eliminate hum while retaining the original single-coil sound, thanks to filtering and boosting within the preamp.
.... so their 'single coil pickup' is still a humbucker with two coils.... did this guy even read what he was writing (meaning article author not post author)

the longer the cable, the higher the capacitance and the greater the high-end loss. That’s not a problem with Fluence, because the pickup connects to a preamp, which acts as a buffer.
..... strewth!!! they've reinvented active electronics

Tone-wise, what you hear with the volume set to 10 is the same as what you hear when it’s dialed down to 2, only louder. A 10-foot cable sounds identical to a 100-foot cable. Want to use a 100-foot cable with your guitar volume set at 2? No problem.
..... yaaa no problem except i dont believe that the human ear has a linear frequency/volume response?

The Fluence team was well aware that most guitarists prefer passive pickups (including all the team members). A battery can be a deal breaker for many players.
... really? i must be outta touch or too oldschool cause most of my associates dont care as long as they get the sounds they are hearing for..

The team concluded that the things guitarists dislike most about batteries are their brief lifespans, the hassle and cost of changing them, and the need to carry spares.
... great so now we have a rechargeable battery that will probably last 2 years anyways, but now add a charging circuit, a miniusb lead, a charger, etc... and how long do those miniusb sockets last on your phone or camera... imagine how long that will last in a sweaty, smoke filled, alcohol drenched gig somewhere while spinning your axe around your head and smashing it into the bassplayers rig....

Unplugging the instrument cable turns Fluence off, conserving juice. (The “off” feature means you may have to replace your existing output jack with a stereo jack.)
.... again i am amazed... every active guitar/bass i have owned does this, its normally built in thru the ground circuit... without the need for retrofitting a stereo jack.

With a 250-hour charge, you could forget to unplug your guitar, go away for a week, and still have three continuous days of non-stop playing before recharging.
..... as musicalmurphy says...'and the climax of the gig will inevitably be at the 251 hour mark.

Heard it all before.... lace sensors... piezo pickups... optical pickups... et all.. all wickid products that were more-or-less touted initially as the 'be-all new way onwards and upwards' ... but eventually settling down to their own little specialist area (i.e. piezos on acoustics, lace on a strat.. etc)

A bit like 'pancake motors' with printed armatures.. Great in some apps, no tso in others.

I always thought making sound was about fun and experimentation anyways, swapping out pickups, tone circuits, trying different tubes, running thru variacs or dummy loads, string gauges/tensions/setups, phases of the moon, facing amp to north/mecca etc etc...

Still... i guess in today's world who has time to do that? Turn the scrollwheel on the '11 rack' or 'zoom' ... it says 'grindy les paul thru marshall stack'... so thats what it must sound like....

Each to their own i guess... as long as yer happy with the sound.

Personally i dont think its musical until its passed thru the void of a vacuum.

It could all be marketing hype, I'm not sure. I understand what they're saying about the uniformity of the printed coil stacks, but I'm not at all sure that it's not just marketing. To me, magnet wire wrapped by machine in coils would be pretty uniform using the machines that are available now. I don't know. it might be BS. May just be the 'hook' that they've been looking for to get into the electric pickup business since they've always just been the acoustic pickup company.

I personally think it is a good thing.

Ever heard Deff Leppard? They can pull out anything from heavy distortion to cool cleans.

Ever heard of Rick (Allen)??

(he was their one armed drummer)
rick

(At least Rick got double the mileage outta drumsticks)
Now does the joke make sense?

After Clarke died / Adrenalyze ... all went a bit soppy after that IMHO.

Nah never heard of them.... ;-P

A hook indeed...

I agree, I would imagine that wire making/winding would be pretty spot on nowadays, same for magnets etc, at least for the good quality manufacturers.

And that's probably the point.... you get what you pay for. With a Chinese or Indian copy, or the entry/low range spec pickup, most will sound below expectation when compared to a good quality EMG/DiMarzio/etc.

(but due to the quality distribution curve, may even jag a 'good sounding' copy)

Whereas the EMG/DiMarzio/SeynoreDuncan/Bartolini etc would have a more consistent higher quality product, but at a greater cost.

Will be interesting to see where they price these things... and how well they will last / reliability given their potentially extreme operating environment. (that is assuming that people still play live nowadays)
