Police woman on tv just now was pretty adamant there are less than 30 hostages.

my guess is the initial estimate of 13ish may be about right.

It's being reported that the employee who escaped left the door open, with a stick of tactical troopers at the door. It's gonna get busy soon.

The employee coming from fire escape or other door was followed by armed police??

The policeman was outside the building, you could just not see him behind the wall.

Police statement:

- Three people have emerged from Martin Place.

- No information that suggests that people have been harmed.

- Police negotiators are trying to resolve the situation.

- People stuck in buildings should remain indoors, and people outside are allowed to go about their business.

- Resources of Police are present and dealing with the situation at Martin Police. More Police have been deployed elsewhere in the city to maintain a presence.

- Can't confirm the number of hostages remaining.

- More operational details are forthcoming.

- Police negotiators have made contact.

- Motivations are still unclear.

- Activation of investigators and intelligence officers.

- The number of 40 hostages does not equate with Police estimates. Does not believe that the number is as high as 30 or 40.

- Can't confirm numbers of hostage-takers.

- Can't speculate on whether or not hostage-takers have IEDs.

- Hostage-taker is armed.

Not a knock on Australians, but DANG the police tape used there is dumb. Checkered blue and white? What lovely calming colors.

Anyone else think it was weird seeing a shield driver putting the pistol on top and sticking his head over?

Never been a cop and don't really know all tactics but that seemed dumb/weird. There's a peephole for a reason.

Anyone else think that they keep repeating the livestream footage over and over so that the criminal doesn't know what's going on outside?

I'm looking at 3 different livestreams and all have suddenly begun to loop through the same video where the hostages escape.

Everything police use in Australia is checkered blue and white. Their cars, it's on the uniform, it covers their police stations etc.
