We're slowly returning, and there will be improvements.

For anyone who was keeping track, 12/12/2014 experienced several rather significant attacks from China-based servers into the US. IP Viking looked like nothing I've ever seen before -- as if WWIII began on the Internet. It's hard to tell if we were a target, but we most certainly were hit by significant cross-fire.

It's been a long and expensive night. More as I know it.

You don't know if you were the target?

You said on twitter that you were attacked immediately after changing to another ip for your website. You were down for at least 10 hours.

Seems like you were targeted.

From NK or China you say?

One would think they would only go after US government affiliated sites.....

What would be their beef with you?

Btw, sorry to hear it cost you a lot of money.

Call it karma.

maybe a gofundme or something.

That might be in the cards.

One of the bits of advice we received last night was to migrate our infrastructure to reliable off-shore (non-US) cloud-based hosting. The nature of last nights attack seemed as though we were caught up in a range of US IP's that were being attacked.

We currently don't have resources for that kind of large-scale move.

we all due respect SO, I've heard that (off-shore, cloud-based) has it's own exposure problems, but, that was a while ago.

We look to have been caught in an attack against a range of IP's. So, yes, while it looked like we were a direct target last night -- this morning it's not as clear-cut.

It was the first time I added ATS to twitter..
I new something was up when I kept refreshing and nothing. The site down reported it down.
To be honest I even had problems with GOOGLE search too.

Never heard of Viking Ddos. I got a laugh on the page you tweeted out about the lady in china missing her flight over ATS and internet..
First 3 attempts failed.. only translation came up.. then the rest all site not found marks. I realised after you tweeted me back that it worked for you, to got check my Firewall/virus guard... sure enough.. it got upset at what it was receiving.
After some resetting. It worked. Lost my flash player over it though. So if there was a video attachment ...
I still couldn't play it.
I proceeded over to the Attack Maps... they were over loaded and kept shutting down..
Wish I could have seen first hand the hell you guys were seeing..
As a joke I sent a picture via twitter of scientist drawing up a new ATS site instructions on a large chalk board.
Yep, that was me :-)
Thank you for getting her back! ;-) thanks to all the techs :-)

Great video there. My first good laugh of the day.

Congratulations on the fast recovery, but sorry to know that this ended up costing you sleep and money. What is the point, if any, of this kind of attack?

How does one get caught in such an attack when DDoS attacks your ip directly?

I remember that tweet like it was just o
Hours ago.. ;-)
Whom ever tweeted said memorable quotes such as..
" not cheap "
" new IP address attacked "
" Viking/Wwiii "
And who can forget... " it works for me " .

I'll just put them all on one easy one time payment in wampum " Ddos greatest Hits " ( pun intended )

I hate to say it... here I go!
Maybe if we value this site as much as we love and hate some of the postings...
ATS can just come out and ask for donations like Wikipedia does to off set the "NOT CHEAP" cost to keep the server running... and maybe lose some of the adds that slow the server down?
OR DO I JUST DIP MY BUTT IN HONEY AND SIT ON A RED ANT HILL?
Think about it folks.

Regardless... welcome back ATS!

Seems strange that you just joined..
And you have DDOS in the name..
Are you responsible?

Welcome aboard... but your writing seems snarky ..

In addition..
You ask why ATS was a specific attack..
The BS flying around even on some YouTube sites..
Is that Some of the owners are CIA Shills.
And this is a gathering tool... also rumored is that the IP address was from Langley VA.. not true.

It's a good thing you guys are good at fixing these things. Otherwise I would have to go bother some other site.

No need.. also hit was GLP.. per one tweet..
Also asides from my ongoing Sony Nightmare...
I bought an XBox one...
It too was hit last night..

I also found it odd..
That a company called Neustar from Norway I think...
Direct tweeted me with a Ddos protection service... I don't follow them..
In fact my twitter and ATS associations are exact opposites..

Why would a company from Norway ( Viking ) put out a request for a pay service?

I'm closing this thread for now. If there's new information, I'll post and re-open.

So let's get back to what ATS does best.

Thanks, everyone, for your support and patience.
