Hi everyone, I acquired this wood carving some time ago in a second hand shop.

I would be very interested in any knowledgable folks input about the piece.

My thoughts are that it is African, but has some strange modern elements such as the style of the upper face.

It's a very detailed carving that may show blurry on the iPad photo, sorry.

I'm wondering what it represents, opinions on this are also interesting to me.

I'm pretty sure that is iron wood, is not signed, and must have taken quite a while to make.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Cheers!

It's beautiful, but I think it's upside down!

Ironwood is really heavy, isn't it? Is the mask heavy?

The photo is upside down, unless we have an ATSer that can levitate candles and likes reading on his/her head.

My parents have two masks that are similar to that, except they are painted. They were given to my dad as a gift by a student of his who was a government muckety-muck from somewhere in Africa (not being snide, just don't remember the country). They were told that the masks are what we would call funeral masks. Not for the deceased, but for those participating in the ceremonies for the funeral. The ones my parents have are supposed to represent good and evil.

Can we see a pic of the back?

What kind of wood it is made from is out of my realm of expertise.

Thanks for the lead, I'm going to have to look that up for sure.

Never considered it might be a funeral right.

Cheers!
