I'll take the conscience of an aging WWII vet over some wanna be politicians running a city. Humans seem to have no problem allowing people to go hungry in a world where it isn't necessary. The human race can be very disgusting.

Really no one to blame except for ourselves. We elect the politicians that put these laws into effect.

You answered your own question mate. There has been a huge shift in developed countries views on homeless and poor people. Over here in the UK, basically the government want poor people to curl up an die quietly in a corner. They dont pay taxes and are seen as a drain, which they need to get rid of, instead of help back onto their feet. We have a lot of homeless war vets on our streets, #ing disgusting. recently, a WW2 decorated pilot, who flew in the battle of britain, shot down 40+ nazis had to sell his #ing MEDALS to get health care. Health care should be free over here, but the current government is trying to sell it off to be more like US health services, IE only for people that can afford it.

Edit : Say what you want about Hitler and the Nazis, at least they didnt outright lie about who they wanted to exterminate and kill. Our governments lie to our faces then # us in the ass completely.

So, where do the homeless he has been feeding take a dump?

Compassion is a great thing but handing out food under the wrong circumstances doesn't necessarily help the situation. The law makes sense though the enforcement is probably overboard. It did get the court's attention though.

Commissioner Sharief complained about what she called the “media hype” over the city's new homeless laws, insisting the city still allows the distribution of food - just through institutions that can do it without affecting the quality of life in the city.

The mayor did say the city will abide by the judge's order and he hoped Mr. Arnold would too:

“We’ve been trying to find some amicable resolution. We hope that Mr. Abbott meets us half way. We’ve asked him to meet us half way in the past.”

Where would they take a dump if he wasn't feeding them? The homeless need to crap just like everyone else, even if they only get food from a trash can.

Maybe the city needs too get some porta potties donated instead of spending time and money prosecuting kindness.

Evil is inherent in that citys elected officials, it is mind boggling trying to undertand the deep hatred they have for the homeless. They are sadists and socopaths. Is it possible to make a citizens arrest on these tyrants ? They are not mentaly fit imo. Derelict of duty or some loop hole one would think ? They belong in jail or a mental institution for a psychological evaluation.

It's a complicated problem with no one solution. Randomly handing out meals is nice but it does nothing to alleviate the situation.

Really? Because, it seems to me that randomly handing out meals FEEDS HUNGRY PEOPLE!

Ever been homeless, Phage? I have, and food and shelter are two very difficult things to find...

Homeless shelters (in my area, Detroit, S.E., MI) are jam packed. Men are rarely taken in (ESPECIALLY THIS TIME OF YEAR) because they take in the women and children first... there aren't even enough shelters for the women and children...

So, if I give a starving, homeless family some Mcdonald's (you support their food, right? Of course you do, you're Phage. You support all of that crap), and I don't provide them with a toilet, IT IS SOMEHOW WRONG?!

LOL

You can feel that way, but I will never stop feeding the homeless. I don't care what laws are put in place.

I would rather see healthy homeless people plugging up the park, than see starving homeless people pushed out of view, where we can't see them suffer their slow agonizing deaths.

Do people HAVE ANY SHAME?

ANY?

This man is a hero and deserves to be elevated in societal status.
Every cop who has arrested him should be required by law to apologize.

Apologize??

No sir, a simple"I'm sorry" will do nothing. Want to make a difference? A real difference? Every single cop who arrested this man should be ordered to compensate him. Restitution for his time, his bail, any supplies or food that went to waste. Then they should be ordered to serve community service and go to that same beach and feed the homeless with this man, on their own time and not work time. The same type of financial and time consuming penalties that many citizens face on a daily basis.

a reply to: jude11 I agree with your statement. However, the city council most likely did not want this senior citizen giving out food in non approved places. The city just wanted this service confined to some out of the way place, where the public could not see the homeless. At least that is my opinion. The City of Ft Lauderdale is full of millionaires, I am sure they pressured the City Council. There is no homeless people on the City Council, I bet.

Phage we all see your point but these poor people are HUMAN BEING's not animal's
I know they are not animals. I see many homeless every day. I give them money on occasion. On other occassions I offer to buy them a meal (which offer has been turned down on at least one occassion). I also see what they leave behind.

So why not provide social housing for them away from the beach as in the long run that too would be far cheaper.
There are such a thing as homeless shelters. Guess what? A lot of homeless don't like them because of the rules. Rules like no drinking or drugs. Rules like curfews.

There are a lot of different kinds of people who are homeless. Giving them a place to congregate (for meals) and offering them nothing else may sound like a really nice thing to do but it does nothing to correct the problem of either the homeless themselves or the community.

I agree Phage. People are homeless because the system is 100% fair and they didn't work hard enough or take advantage of all the opportunities they had to not be homeless. Clearly our system is designed to steal from the rich and give to the poor. It's a bunch of socialism I say! These homeless people think they can just beg for food?? Who do they think they are??

And that was his only intention...imagine that. As someone said earlier, when they start outlawing kindness, we're really screwed.

Now watch what the police do. They are going to start harassing him for other "infractions". This is what they always do when a civilian shows them up, or wins a battle against them. I wouldn't be surprised if the elderly gentleman ends up deceased by the end of Christmas. I mean, come on...they have killed puppies running away from them for less. It will probably be an "accident"...but the people will get the message that they are trying to deliver. All I know is...the cops are not finished with him by far. It's what they do as bullies...prey on the weak, frail and oppressed, because they are cowards who need government protection, and other gang members to protect them.
