MiGs escort Sukhois all the time.

It doesn't matter if Su-34s were there or not. It's another example of a stupid move during an intercept that should have been routine. Sooner or later there's going to be an accident, or someone will pull the trigger.

The event tok Place last year. It was just made Public now. Probably to boost the tention between the West and Russia.

And? So since it was last year it wasn't a stupid move? Again, it was another stupid move that is going to eventually lead to something happening.

I think it was only recently announced that there were -31 in the group when the HUD footage was released.

Here are two reports, one from early November and the other more recent after the footage came out. Both talk about the same intercept on Oct 29th:

That Depends on what Our pilots did. There is no mention off if there were provocations from Our pilots.

One thing is for sure, It makes Russia look bad.

The speed of sound slows down the higher altitude you go, at sea level it is 661 knots, at 40,000ft it is 573 knots. So mach 0.66 at 24,500ft is about 397 knots, 456mph, 735kmh.

The airspeed of 278 knots on the F-16 HUD has C next to it meaning calibrated airspeed which is different from true airspeed.

Because we never had to intercept a high altitude, high speed aircraft.

That's a level 3 burn.

But seriously I believe that Iran (obviously before the revolution) bought the F-14 + Phoenix, land-based, to intercept Soviet Mig-25 and this was done quite successfully.

If you get a carrier qualified airframe and baby it by landing softly on tarmac, it will last quite a long time.

The ground radar would have picked up a Foxhound at that altitude, if they were able to vector the F-16 in to the Su-34 the Mig-31 would have been detected. Norway doesn't have primitive air defense systems by any means and one capable of tracking a Su-34 is more than capable of tracking a Mig-31. Are you familiar with how a modern air defense system works?

Iran probably can fly 2 maybe 3 F-14s at this time, and that's over estimating. The US cut support so parts became scarce and there are stories that many were sabotaged. Only way they can get parts is to re-engineer them or use existing airframes for donor parts. Probably why they still rock the F-4 Phantom because so many were built and sold to other countries so Iranians can buy from them.

If that mig-31 was indeed going mach 3 they'd both be dead.

So what you are implying is the US which has waged several wars showing off it's supposed strength the last 20 years is weak, and Russia who is called out constantly as falling behind by western media, and the rest of the world is in reality strong because it has done nothing to deny these claims thus laying quiet while it's really strong as suggested by sun tzu.....

They're probably capable of manufacturing some by now. Remember, Iran, unlike the rest of the mideast except for Israel and Turkey, actually has a significant indigenous manufacturing & engineering capability. They do make their own missiles, which is far from easy.

No doubt it would be expensive and some kinds of wear can't be fixed by replacing parts.

The main deficiency vs modern aircraft would be high-end electronics & software. That is far from easy and takes long experience.

True, the economics are better.

Iran can fly about 28 F-14 today.

I bet some of you didnt know that Iran delivered a few F-14 to Russia in the early or mid 80s..
