Theories as to the causes of so many apparantly unexplained air crashes in the mountains of Sierra Nevada ranging from extraterrestrial technology to
storms.
I can tell you first hand.
The winds are incredible.. as the winds hit the west side of the sierra Nevada's..
The down draft on the east will push anything downwards .... and hard!
In 1986 we lost a crew of three in a Care flight helicopter crash thanks giving. It was snowy the pilot traversed the mountain ..only to crash.. lost
the patient as well.. so 4 died in the incident .. pilot made a distress call citing high wind gust just before.. this happened in the Bishop area on
the California Nevada line. NOTE: Rumor has it the wheel of the helicopter indented a passing vehicle ..... the driver reached his destination to
find damage.... it was considered that the pilot had noticed he hit the car and lifted hard.. resulting in a struggle with the helicopter .. then
crashed killing all 4..
As a flight medic at the time ( 1995 to 1998 ) I a can say it got scary at times!
I was involved in 1 incident where the tail rotor gave out as we approached landing in MT. Rose.. Nevada side so we flipped into pine trees..
thankfully the trees broke the fall...
We walked away with minor injuries....
I remember thinking... awwwww crap! Trees don't grow upside down!
This incident was not wind related..
NOTE 2: just ask anyone who has flown into Reno Tahoe Airport... the sudden drops and hard turbulence will make you sweat every time!
They have even extended the runway to help the pilots.... still a scary ride.. but before that. There were A LOT of aborted landings...due to
fighting the planes in the air and over shooting the runway!

NOTE NOTE: the type of helicopter at the time was an Aluoette .. it was chosen for it's ability to fly at higher altitudes... so.. wheels it had on
that model..
