In a meeting this week with Met Police Commissioner Sir John Stevens he told of numerous thwarted terrorist attacks, one of them being of the scale of the Madrid bombings. Another major issue he raised was that of an increase in the carrying of knives and crime commited with knives.

Police have prevented a terror attack in London on the scale of the Madrid bombings, according to a police chief.

He said a number of terror attacks had been thwarted and hundreds of people were going through the courts.

"The risk of an attack to London has not changed; an attack is still inevitable," he said.

"Thank God to date, and we have had to work extremely hard, we've thwarted attacks, " he added.

When asked if the force had stopped an attack on the scale of Madrid he said: "Yes, I can't discuss it because of court proceedings but yes we have stopped a Madrid."

The 11 March attacks on four commuter trains in Madrid which killed 200 people was Europe's worst terror attack since the 1988 Lockerbie bombing.

With the recent report that an attack similar to the 9/11 plane attack was stopped in the UK and now this report of a Madrid style attack, this is more than worrying. That is of course if these reports are 100% true.

The fact that "hundreads" of people are going through the courts on charges related to terrorism is not something that has been widely publicised, especially on television. It would be interesting to know what terrorist groups these attempted attacks relate to, whether they are internal or external groups.

Maybe Britain is not as safe as many people, including myself, have believed untill now.
