so women being view as sex objects instead of equals is OK?
I guess I misunderstood feminism

I thought I should add for OrphenFire - as an extension of what I was posting there earlier: Let me float another outcome for you about the idea that if payment makes more sex available for the guys who might go psycho for being turned down. If you monetize sex in society as a primary model, most of the men on this planet can't afford the "services" being rendered to them right now. You might want to think about what it would mean if women actually were thinking in these terms regularly.
Most men can't afford a ten minute bad blow-job from a cross-eyed syphilitic whore in anything expect a society in total breakdown

Truth be told, it will probably die out as a profession within 10-20 years as sex bots which are now quite realistic will replace prostitutes. Currently, only $12,000 will buy a good sex bot now with realistic skin. So in the quite near future this argument will be moot. (see a previous post of mine in this thread for links to good sex bots) Any lonely man who can afford a cheap car will be able to purchase his own sex bot and never have to worry about the current "underworld" again, or hope for legalization, he can have his very own customized prostitute, programmed to do his will and to his preferences in the comfort and security of his own home. They can also be programmed to "love" or at least show all the physical and verbal signs of love for their owner and the owner can have the unconditional love and all the sex they want, all for far less than paying a prostitute regularly.
I suspect the sex bots will only make real women that much more valuable. While the middle class guy may buy the sex bot, the very rich man will be willing to pay a lot more then $12,000 for a "real girl". It will be a status thing.
I knew a girl who was a high-price "escort" during college. In just two years, she made enough for all 4 years of tuition, a nice house and car, and lots of nice clothes. She was very beautiful, very smart, and very choosy with her clients. If I had a more outgoing personality, I would have done it.

Not when the woman calls the shots. The woman says "you give me this (money) and I will do that (sex)". Each person walks away with what they want. What's not equal about that?

Because it is normally not "I will do this"
it is normally "you will do this for me" and I will give you money
Normally the John calls the shots, not the prostitute

Unless you are or have been a prostitute, you don't know how it "normally" happens. I do. You're wrong.

Hey, maybe they'd even form unions!
Prostitution is where sex and money and gender and power all come together, all of which are actually and symbolically some of the most powerful phenomena in our, or any, society. It is an issue on which everyone has an opinion, and generally these opinions are of their own feelings and experiences about sex and power, rather than informed by current sex workers or the academic evidence base available.
Sex workers ourselves are the experts on the industry, despite the clamorous voices of those who wish to speak for us, and who dismiss the accounts from sex workers that do not fit with their ideological positions. Those who ignore our voices and dismiss the complexity of our experiences are part of creating the very problems they say they wish to solve.
So the next question is, why do some girls choose prostitution; and why are former sex workers, and people with an interest in legalizing this activity, so convinced that it is a respectable practice?
