It was absolute hysteria. I have never heard so many professors and researchers come out to attack media hysteria, and it still didn't matter. People just kept freaking out and the media took every opportunity to use the term Ebola at any report of a sneeze.

Media has to start taking responsibility for the effects of their hysterical reporting. If not just for the economic impact their fear monger reports cause, there is also the duress the cause for people.

All Ebola did was get everyone's attention off of Israel's crimes against humanity for a short while.

You're joking, right?

You're comparing things people choose to do to a contagion?

This rhetoric has been getting passed around a lot, and all it does is show how ridiculously naive people are.

Obesity and smoking are not diseases. They are choices.

lol don't have a cow man. I think he was just using the term pandemic a bit off. The point was that what he mentioned was that we indeed have some true problems that seem to stick with a large amount of people. It is a very valid point.

Cool. Nice to see you admit that your fears were misplaced. Better than some others, and I see that others in this thread still haven't let go yet.

I have to ask....let go of what?

I find it disheartening that the american public has bought into the "one or the other" mindset.

You are either "freaking out" or you "dont care".

Problem is, the thinkers among the population have a capacity to pay attention, without buying into hysteria.

Let go of their fear.

By the way, if you don't feel like the post was addressing you, then it probably wasn't. I know that people can be concerned and not be flipping their s# at the same time, but those people are few and far between. Maybe drop your defenses a bit.

I didnt think it WAS addressing me, as the description you gave doesnt fit me in any way.

I do, however, stand by what I said. The "either/or" mindset is a media creation.

Are y'all thick ?

Ebola is one of the worlds most virulent pathogens - highly highly contagious and very deadly indeed .

Do you know how much healthcare the average Indian has access to ? Bugger all . So how the hell do you know its not swimming in the Ganges right now ?

It's not going to amount to anything ? Try sampling the amount of data you have access to , to assess the current situation . It's like 'nothing' to you now , because you in fact know 'nothing' about it anymore . Where's the facts and figures ? NY facts and figures ? Where are they ?

You've got till 2016 to learn about exponential growth , then make your un-necessary apologies .

Consider - if it wasn't for us collectively , and our genuine concern for the world's health , ebola might have had all the chances it needed to fully escape w.Africa , infect the world and cause a catastrophe on an unprecedented scale !
Now , things are being done , aren't they ? We made sure of it - Dr.Brantley's quotes by example .
Now , it has less chances by far .

For God's sakes don't make the dumbest mistake trying to admit you were wrong and trying to appease some self-satisfied false prophets . Damn it , don't turn into one of them either !
Keep an open mind or risk being a total loser .

I don't consider myself a fear monger, nor do I think that Ebola is not somethings to be concerned about. I have my concerns about how they present the disease and their manipulation of the masses.

Two things they bank on:
1. Our short memories.
2. Our tendency to develop Chicken Little Syndrome.

I have learned not to buy anything they are selling. I didn't buy the "Ebola has been unleashed in America!" Death is coming for you, your time is nigh!" "The walking dead are flying into America and creeping over the borders!"

Just as they can bank on how we are going to react, what we are going to say and what we are going to do and more important, what we are "not" going to do. We can also bank on the fact that what ever they are selling is solely for their benefit and solely to fit their agenda.

I have to admit I don't have a clue regarding their game plan involving Ebola. I am pretty darn sure that if they are telling you the answer is in the sky, you had better start digging. If they tell you to look right, you better have someone you really respect and trust, up against your back or, you better have a darn good panoramic mirror.

Partial truths, distractions and misdirection have served them well, and like most people, they stick to what has been proven to be tried and true. We have become very highly predictable. We are very easily led and manipulated. We know how corrupt our world has become. Our problem is we are looking for the boogie man in all the wrong places. We see all the movies about the walking dead, the infected out to eat your flesh and make you one of the monsters. Profiling is very popular today. Look at the profile of a Zombie and look in the mirror. We are all contaminated and are just in different stages of the infection process. Until we get rid of the monsters inside, we have no way of winning against the monster outside.

Before you take offense, remember that almost everyone when first infected denies they are. By the time most admit to themselves they have been contaminated, it is far too late. You don't have to accept what I am saying. It is very easy to dismiss my observations. You can label me as the worst kind of conspiracy theorist, an old fart conspiracy theorist, that has been around too long and seen way too much. Just remember that it is said that with age come wisdom. Unfortunately what is considered as wise usually involves keeping your mouth shut and flying under the radar. Since I have a very difficult time with that, I choose to go with the alternate definition of wisdom - the sum of learning through the ages; knowledge. I like this one because I have racked up a hefty sum of learning over my munificent years and I have the desire to share; for what ever it is worth.

yes some are thick. My thoughts are not that it is completly over but that it has been managed here enough that it did not spread in the time i was saying it had the possibility too. Sure it could mutate here. The only cure that was working was survivors blood and that is limited and my point was that if infected numbers outgrew the rate of blood donated then it would get outta hand and many would die. the first couple weeks after duncan it could have gone either way. the ones saying that it would not will nott be admitting that it could have but it could have. just like there is a high chance that it could still spread. If we continue doing what we are doing then we will make it through the winter and may see a cure next year.

I am glad the worse did not happen and that much of my post on the subject did not happen and that others were right.

the poster was referencing pandmic levels. some intelluctuals let it get the best of them and miss the point. it is not a meme being parroted. people compare things to pandemc levels all the time. one peron said pandemic and not pandemic levels and then you come and steer the just of the post away into a wording contest. i have yet to figure out how some that come here and have things all figured out and can never been wrong i wonder why they have not fixed all the worlds problems yet besides in their own mind. any rebuttel someone gives to my last sentence is just admitting to themselves that they do not have it all figured out. otherwise they would enact solutions that trump any problems including ignorrance of others.

No "wording contest" (whatever that means) about it. It is a false comparison. 100%.

Not sure what or who you are referencing here....unless you are saying that pointing out intellectual dishonesty means I "have it all figured out"....

Um, Doy? Not sure who you think it is that claims they have it all figured out.

The WHO has reference labs all around the world, they are the ones that confirm it not the CDC..Thats why there are delays in confirming positive/negatives. Here in Australia the 2 closest WHO reference labs are Johannesburg National Institute of Virology and Atlanta (CDC) we have a good 48hours turn around, in that time though there are local labs who will test (and keep testing) until a confirmation is given from WHO reference lab.

There are also lots of labs worldwide (private and government) that receive the sample to test but its only the WHO who can confirm.

The information is still being reported its just not on the nightly news.. Its all still there if you want to read about it, each day i still get about 2 Ebola updates and once a week get an update on suspected cases worldwide.

Suspected cases are just simply not an issue worthy or reporting there are literally 10s of thousands around the world and so far every single one has been negative. The Doctors and Infectious disease specialist in public health we know what we are doing. BUT rest assured if there is confirmed cases anywhere in the world outside of Africa you will hear about it.

The virus has been isolated in humans thats one of the ways we are able to grow it and experiment on it so im a bit confused about that claim? maybe im misunderstanding what you mean?

The pharmaceutical companies all fast tracked their programs because they were essentially begged by the WHO and various government and NGOs. There isnt any conspiracy there, trust me i love a big pharma conspiracy and there is literally hundreds of examples of these guys acting in unethical ways in the pursuit of profits but this really isnt one of those times... at least not yet anyway...

You guys are giving the CDC too much cred.. while certainly at a global level we all look to the CDC to take a lead in public health issues at the end of the day we dont answer to them, we arent funded by them, our comand chains are completely separate, our research is not influenced by them.. they arent in charge of the hundreds of organisation that are involved, they dont call the shots.

Ummm Ebola is not every virologists nightmare... i cant tell you how many virologist and infectious disease specialists ive spent time with over the past year are beyond excited to have the opportunity to work with ebola... they are not scared of it in any way unless they are in the process of writing a book about it..

Based on a recent research report i remember reading in the lancet i think that on predicted travel out of the West African countries an average of 3 people with Ebola would be leaving every month (and the vast majority of these just go to other African countries)- this is based on pre outbreak number, meaning that now given the exit screening and controls in place there is little risk. Think about it in the 12months that it has been raging with only 1 person has been able to leave the country with Ebola and not be stopped. (im not counting the HCWs in that as they are already known to public health officals and are followed up so of extremely little risk of transmission)

Spanish flu is not a valid comparison to ebola.

Yeah it's interesting isn't it, so many people were so absolutely convinced that THIS WAS IT, this was the big one that would bring down civilisation as we know it.

And yet here we still are.

Interesting there are still people trying to claim that THIS IS IT too.

There is some very interesting psychology behind the whole Doom Porn thing. It must be a truly exhausting and depressing way to exist though, in such constant fear all the time.
