Experts have shown that when certain parts of cannabis are used to treat cancer tumours alongside radio therapy treatment the growths can virtually disappear.

The new research by specialists at St George's, University of London, studied the treatment of brain cancer tumours in the laboratory and discovered that the most effective treatment was to combine active chemical components of the cannabis plant which are called cannabinoids.

Two of these called tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) were tested as part of the research into brain cancer which is particularly difficult to treat and claims the lives of about 5,200 each year. It also has a particularly poor prognosis as the rate of survival after five years of patients' diagnosis is around 10%.

Cannabinoids are the active chemicals in cannabis and are also known more specifically as phytocannabinoids. There are 85 known cannabinoids in the cannabis plant.

The new research is the first to show a drastic effect when combining THC and CBD with irradiation. Tumours growing in the brains of mice were drastically slowed down when THC/CBD was used with irradiation.

Cannabis extract can have dramatic effect on brain cancer, says new research

In this study the tumours were treated in a variety of ways, either with no treatment, the cannabinoids alone, and irradiation alone or with both the cannabinoids and irradiation at the same time.

Those treated with both irradiation and the cannabinoids saw the most beneficial results and a drastic reduction in size. In some cases, the tumours effectively disappeared in the animals. With results like these, the researchers want to start trials on humans in the near future.

Conclusion: The benefits of the cannabis plant elements were known before but the drastic reduction of brain cancers if used with irradiation is something new and may well prove promising for patients who are in gravely serious situations with such cancers in the future.

Personally, I think I would skip on irradiation and just stick with the cannabinoids. I had read an article a couple months ago that talked about cannabis and how the most effective/beneficial way to use cannabis medicinally is to have all of it, not just focusing on special cannabinoid strains with just THC or CBD.

Brilliant.

I bet Big Pharma are squirming in their collective boots. People really need to wake up and break the taboo surrounding the cannabis plant. It DOES have medical value.

There have been several studies with cancers, that show tumor reduction of up to 80% in animal tests.

One of the very many reasons that hemp/MJ has been so damn hard to work with and legalize, is the fear of big pharma that their drug money won't be so high anymore.

Because you can't patent anything that's created from a natural product and therefore, no money to be had.

I eagerly await the next series of studies due out next summer.

a reply to: Sabiduriai have brain cancer and exhausted all possible treatment options. I ended treatment in the summer My only problem is, I had a stroke in May, which I fear may have been caused by using said natural remedies, so am very scared about trying it again. If my recent scan comes back with the Tumor growning back I may have to try it again, otherwise I will avoid until I'm certain it played no role in my stroke.

I've seen evidence that says marijuana reduces stroke risk and I've seen evidence that says it increases the risk. Of course you'll hear from both parties. But what's pretty well agreed upon is that after a stroke, marijuana can be very useful for recovery.

So given that you have cancer and just recently had a stroke, that's actually two reasons to not avoid it.

Keep up the good fight. It's totally winnable.

I have a feeling pretty soon these surveys are either going to dissapear or be altered in favor of big pharma i hope that eventually people open there eyes and realize that there are better alternatives than traditional medicine.. a reply to: tothetenthpower

I doubt it.

Too much momentum now.

Even in the US, the MAYO clinic of all places are doing clinical trials with MJ.

That's incredible, considering 10 years ago they were a major force against medical MJ.

I guess time will tell, but as far as I can tell, this is only going to get better.

Technically they were right, but it wasn't because of the weed, it was the prison you ended up in for the weed, that caused those issues.

Look into juicing cannabis (and the CBDs may be far more important than the THC content)

Ah! now we have the truth about cannabis. I doubt this is new news to big pharma and the politicians who protect that industry. I bet they have always known that cannabis is a health beneficiary which does not cost a huge amount to make. We now know why politicians like cammeron hate to think anyone should have the right to take cannabis as a personal choice and do their best to pass laws to make people criminals for taking something many instinctively know is of benefit to them.

When is everyone going to finally accept the fact that this is a miracle plant? It has more uses than any other plant and is extremely cheap and easy to grow. Its nothing less than a gift from God to humans, plain and simple.

Guess we'll see the propaganda machine, making this look untruthful or anything else that can be thrown at it. They are losing the fight so quickly now, the push back will be stronger. Overall it really # me off that a potential easement of suffering if not a cure in medical cases could have been very effective in place of not if unrestricted, studies promoted, etc., over the years.

After all is said and done imagine all the lives ruined through legislation against it. Think about all the ppl who where sent to jail and lives went downhill.

No apology or nothing, no recognition that they where wrong too. Just legalize it and shrug their shoulders in the end like it never happened.

I agree juicing is good and CBD's rock. All cannabinoids are just as important IMHO
So sick of the CBD craze. How about looking at all of them.

And the only reason for that is because the Us owns the patent on Medical Mj so they will profit of it regardless they always will.. no one ever digs into uncle sams pockets..a reply to: tothetenthpower

"The U.S. government classifies marijuana as a Schedule 1 drug, defined as having “no medicinal value and highly addictive.” Yet, they own the patent for using cannabinoids as an antioxidant and neuro-protectant.

Yes you are reading this correctly: The U.S. government, which includes the DEA, has patented medical marijuana."

Are you working with a doctor or other professional who knows about using cannabis as a treatment?

I'm sorry it did not work out for you, as with everything else, cannabis effects everyone differently.

We just have to worry about Monsanto wanting to patent a strain of cannabis. I'm pretty sure that is just going to make people sick & they can say "see it doesn't work" blah blah blah
