Asiana ordered to suspend flights to San Francisco for 45 days

Asiana Airlines has been ordered to suspend all flights to San Francisco for a period of 45 days by the Korean government. This directive is in response to the crash in July of last year. A suspension of 90 days could have been ordered, but it was decided that due to crew actions after the crash, 45 days would be appropriate.

The IATA, Asiana, and several other carriers wrote to the Korean authorities urging them not to suspend flights, as it would be a major blow to Asiana, but it was upheld. Arrangements are being made to increase flights with other carriers to make up for the loss of capacity. The NTSB report stated that the cause was directly attributed to “the flight crew’s mismanagement of the approach and inadequate monitoring of airspeed.”

Asiana has six months to complete the suspension, and 15 days to appeal the ruling.

Seoul-based Asiana Airlines has been ordered by Korean authorities to suspend its flights to San Francisco International Airport (SFO) for a 45-day period as a penalty for the July 6, 2013 crash of a Boeing 777-200ER at that airport.

A review panel from South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MLIT) said the carrier must complete the suspension period within six months, so it does not have to begin it immediately. Asiana has 15 days to decide if it will appeal the ruling, and the airline has indicated it will do so.

Korean authorities told local media that a 90-day suspension could have been imposed, but the duration was cut due to the actions of the crew in assisting passengers after the crash.
