A recent report by Britas Eriksson of Groning university in the Netherlands showed that there were correlations between overfishing and algal
blooming. Her study showed that when top predatory fish, such as pike or perch were excluded from fisheries, the numbers of prey fish and smaller
predators increased, consuming smaller invertebrates like snails that help regulate the algal growth. This allowed algal blooming to occur
uninhibited.
The report was published in 2011 with the title "Does Overfishing Promote Algal Blooming?", if anyone should find this interesting.
