Great topic and discussion.

It's expanding into the multiverse, the endless and eternal expanse of spacetime where "bubble" universes are born from quantum vacuum instabilities.

Perfect! Yes, it is ever expanding into the multiverse. It's a very difficult concept to conceive unless you go into the physics of it.

We assume there has to be a "place" to expand into. The only basis for this "place" is just our own idea that it has to be the way it is.

It's likely much more simple. The Universe simply IS.... There may not be an "edge" to it...or, the "edge" may simply return us to our point of origin, like traveling the surface of a sphere.

Conversely, what we think of as "The Universe" may just be yet another grouping of groups.

I'm sure we originally thought our solar system was the whole Universe...only to find out there are other stars.
Then, we thought our galaxy (a group of stars) was maybe the Universe...until realizing it is but one of many galaxies.
Perhaps too, the Universe (as we know it, and as far as we can detect), is just one of many such groupings where other "big bangs" happened to make their groups, etc....yet separated by so much "space" that we simply have no idea they are even there.

Yes. It is entirely possibly that there is no "place" that the universe expanded into -- i.e., there is no "place" in which the universe is taking up more space as it expands.

The expansion of the universe is not taking up more space "somewhere" as it expands, because there is no "somewhere" in which our universe exists. As you say...it simply IS.
