"Fireworks are a cool mix of pyrotechnics and chemistry, but this experiment just about tops any explosion I’ve ever seen. Apparently lighting a pile of Mercury(II) thiocyanate Hg(SCN)2 and Ammonium chromate (NH4)2CrO4 starts off a reaction that looks almost like a volcano—and that's before the brimstone tentacles start spewing out.

Remember, kids: Science is cool—and a little scary sometimes."

Actually, as all Lovecraft fans know this is opening the gates of R'lyeh. For the sake of humanity! Do not.... I repeat do not open those gates! Leave the olde god dreaming!

Aw now you're just begging to have someone open pandora's box. That's like placing a sign on a piece of cheese cake "do not eat"

Why do people associate Hell with fire?

Hell fire, huh? The lake of fire? The fire that is never quenched? That burns forever and ever?

Every system has its own hell. In you may go, the place where souls are unmade and your disassociated sub atomic particles will remain forever.

Well, almost forever...

OK, if you insist, I will open the portal to allow the apocalypse to start. I have been putting it off, waiting to let people prepared. We will start with a little event locally, those little white demons will cover the ground a foot deep here by tuesday morning. There will be power outages and cars stuck on side the road.

Oh, sorry, I was just repeating our local weather forecast.

What you just saw is called Pharaoh's snakes, and no I'm not kidding.

Pharaoh's snakes or Pharaoh's serpents are a type of small firework in which a lighted tablet exudes smoke and ash in a growing column which resembles a snake.

This is an extremely simple firework demonstration. All you need to do is ignite a small pile of mercury(II) thiocyanate, Hg(SCN) Mercury thiocyanate is an insoluble white solid which can be purchased as a reagent or can be obtained as a precipitate by reacting mercury(II) chloride or mercury(II) nitrate with potassium thiocyanate.

This is all I need to say here and I think that I am speechless

Oh yes , one last thing to say and that is that we are the most confused planet in our galaxy right now and everyone is very confused.

Superb!

In the UK, you can buy indoor firework sets. One of them is a small tablet that you light and it turns into a twisting tentacle like in the video. The tablet's about 1" diameter and pushes out a 'snake' that's maybe 2 feet long.

I'm gonna google the ingredients unless someone can post them up here? I know a science teacher who'd probably love to try this in a lesson.

ETA - will send the video link, thanks!

let the law suits commence! Hahahaha.... It would be wise for this experiment be utilized in a well ventilated area with proper personal protection equipment for all observers as well as the one conducting it. Great point voidhawk! Safety first everyone!!!

All chemicals used should come with proper material safety data sheets labeled and read by everyone observing the experiment. And proper safety measures taken. If any chemicals used are improperly labelled, discard it properly in its respected chemical trash receptacle.
