Three men were executed in a southwestern Chinese province for baby trafficking. The sale of both women and children has become an increasing problem in China. Some of it stems from the strict population control laws in place. Couples are limited to one child, and for cultural and practical reasons, sons are preferred over daughters. This has led to a shortage of females.

BEIJING, China (Reuters) -- China has executed three baby traffickers who sold 11 infants in a country where strict family planning rules allow couples normally to have just one child.

The three were executed in Kunming in the southwestern province of Yunnan, Xinhua news agency said.

"Many babies kidnapped by them are still missing and there is no way to rescue them," a judge with the Kunming Intermediate People's Court was quoted as saying.

The sale of women and children has become a nationwide problem in China, where stringent rules on family planning have resulted in far more boys than girls.

The United Nations has estimated 250,000 women and children were victims of this in China last year. While on a percentage of population this may be low, it still is a staggering number. China has executed more than 60 traffickers and the problem still persists. It does not say if the customers for the babies include foreigners, but I would not be surprised.

It seems that this whole problem could be solved if they just allowed easier adoptions for these unwanted children and girls...
there is no shortage of willing parents, just of legal ability to connect unwanted chinese girl babies to wanting parents...
so the black market baby trade is born... that allows all the dark elements of the baby exporting business to come into play.
with easier legal export adoptions enabled, china would be happy, since they prefer to keep males over females, and the biggest bonus:
the female chinese babies would probably prefer to grow up in a country where their gender didn't make them a second class citizen as well.
