It is actually very interesting and complex question. In my opinion many people in the West don't know how it happened. They think that they know, but it is only a partial picture that they know.
In the SU around mid 80-ties formed a distinct youth contrculture from within. This contculture was influenced by the West, and yet it wasn't exactly in the lines of mainstream Western culture but more akin to the own Western contrculture ( like social protest of 60-ties in the West). Soviet underground was thinking that all West is like own West underground, it was a naive vision, but this kind of illusion is understandable because of "Iron Curtain" distortion. Soviet propaganda criticized mostly examples of "West underground" as a bad thing, so for Soviet youth West was equaled to West underground.

And this vision of SU is unrecoznized in the West. They think that Reagan or that Stalin that killed 40 million people were the causes of social revolution in SU, but the truth is more complex. SU youth didn't give a damn about Stalin or Reagan.
