Militants fired mortars at the Italian Embassy in Baghdad. No casualties have been reported, but three Iraqis were wounded. This is not the first time the Italian Embassy has been targeted. Italy has been targeted for their support of the US in the Iraq war.
A number of mortar shells have exploded near the Italian embassy in Baghdad, Defence Minister Antonio Martino said.

"Several mortar shells fell about 50 metres from the embassy but there were no Italian victims," he said in Rome on Thursday.

"We don't know if there were Iraqi victims."

Martino added: "Our intelligence services have for some time been passing us information that an attack against the embassy may be possible. This time there was no harm done."

Italy has 3000 military personnel in Iraq based in the area around the southern town of Nasiriya.

More and more the violence in Iraq has been targeted at westerners and the Iraqis who cooperate with them. It appears all of it is in an effort to stop next months elections.

The real questions is, who is behind most of these attacks? Is it the work of Abu Musab Al Zarqawi's group, or is it being directed by the old Baathist regime in Syria?
