The controversial Civil Union Bill has been passed through parliament by a vote of 65 to 55.

While fewer than half of MPs were in the House for the debate, supporters and opponents of the bill filled the public gallery.

Passionate speeches had marked the progress of the Civil Union Bill through the House after the Greens provided the government with the numbers needed to put parliament into urgency.

The bill, which gives legal recognition to defacto and same sex relationships, attracted more than 6,000 public submissions, most of them strongly opposed.

Full Story

It's quite Ironic how a bill such as this can be passed, following the Destiny Church march, and other strong oppisition from the Right.

90% of all public submissions made on the bill were against it.

I think that shows how the NZ socialist labour government, is not representative of the NZ people. I'll be voting against them, that's for sure.

Personally I just find all this plain stupid.

I didn't get married to my wife because of any ideas regarding any 'sanctity of marriage' or 'value' society places on our marriage or because it gave me priviledges single people or gay people do not have.

I think every couple should have the same rights in relation to inheritance, pensions etc etc as anyone else regardless of the gender make-up of the couple.

Frankly I find the whole 'problem' some people have with gay people deeply suspect, tragic, totally sad and an absolute bore.

Im not a big fan of the current government either but there arent many other partys that look any good Don Brash dosnt seem to grasp that low wages dosnt equal more jobs. The civil union bill is one of the few things I have agree with that this government has done.
