if youre into experimental/avant guarde you should check them out.

beefheart and zappa were buds..kind of came up together.
zappa produced their masterpiece, trout mask replica...

of course the magic band also gave us the fantastic guitar player ry cooder..

their stuff is definitely not for everyone but i think its well worth digging into.

this was an insane record for the times......1969

en.wikipedia.org...

here it is if you want to listen

Big fan of Beefheart. I got to see him once at the Paradise in Boston. This girl and I got up and danced and Don was all smiles. I met a guy who was in constant contact with him and he'd tell me some interesting stories.

The band practiced "Trout Mask Replica" everyday for a year before going into the studio and cutting it in a matter of hours.

Great Talent, I miss him. I don't think the Timberlake=Beyonce types will get it.

its not for everyone...thats for sure

beefheart was out there.

also, ry cooder is a very accomplished guitarist but the rest of the band members are not awesome musicians.
like the drummer, jimmy carl black.

that does not mean its not good music cause it is. just know that the level of musicianship will not be on par with say the people zappa played with.

check out the song party of special things to do

very simple but i love it

Heh. Got through the first few songs. I like it. He reminds my of Tom Waits.

I got a CD copy of Trout Mask Replica and hated it.

A bit intellectual for my taste, but The Party of Special Things to Do has a surprisingly funky groove. I bet David Byrne was listening.
