First off - Mods, I don't have proof of this, so it may need to be moved to The Gray Area. If so, please do so.

I just got off the phone with my Orthopedist's office regarding a simple request to send my x-rays of my spine to another orthopedic office. While I was on the phone with the front office, the woman I was speaking with asked me if I had a fever!!!!!! I sort of laughed at that and told her no. I then asked her why she needed to know that. She seemed sort of embarrassed, and told me that the CDC was requiring them to ask every patient that called or came into the office if they had a fever! My ORTHOPEDIST!

I realize this isn't news, but I live in Charleston, SC. I would think it would be necessary for Internal Medicine, or Family Practice offices, but an Orthopedic office? What would have happened if I had said yes? (I don't, btw). This just made the whole Ebola thing a little more real to me. Anyway, thought you all should know...

Maybe she saw something funny and wanted to make sure you don't have boneitis or something.

I can see offices taking their own precautions too...in one of my last jobs when one h1n1 or whatever was going around they ordered all these sanitary stations. I wouldn't think much of it but you threw in that the cdc told them. That is what is crazy. People wont want to say out of fear of quarantine.

I took my little brother to the pediatrician today in Baltimore md and they asked the same question. I found it odd to ask when they have temp taking equipment there. We said no to the question and they didn't even bother to actually take his temp to confirm it.

This Ebola scare is being generated by people and
Not facts. More likely than not the flue may be spreading there, oh and please dont embarrass yourself and go all captain trips, "its been down played" "the governmentnisnt telling us everything" AGAIN the last time that happened was AIDS, not just 2 or 3/people died before the government even said"hey its out there be careful" 50,000, Died in the US, do you people get that 50,000. Died Millions infected and had their death sentace handed to them. Regan had to wait for Rock Hudson to die, to even say "we might need to research this".

Aids killed far moreeople an no one knew what it was. This is all pretty sad. You go nuts after 2 or 3 people who had DIRECT contact with Ebola, where the hell were you when AIDS hit?

If there ever comes a time when a virus comes that effects only your group of friends and you lost almost everyone, and then your government did NOTHING until forced to I wonder, looking at this CRAP what you would think.,...

At the age of 24 I had lost 5 friends to AIDS, which the government would not even acknowledge, for years.,.its been almost 9 months since the " outbreak"HOW MANY FRIENDS HAVE YOU LOST???

Not to mention the Spanish Flu. Did we forget that this pandemic killed MILLIONS ? This ebola scare is money and vaccine agenda at its finest. Be scared of the mandatory vaccine they push on you. Not this hoax of outbreak. Ebola is real and the death is causes is real but this outbreak isnt.

The cure to Ebola and Cancer is as follows : A 10ppm Nano Colloidial Silver Mixture with H2o2 (Peroxide) And a intraveinous vitamin C and Delta 9 treatment.

The fear comes from the unknown mechanism it uses to spread. I was still poopin my pampers for the Aids problem but from my point of view that's what has people in a huff. Grandma and the babies aren't afraid of catching aids from some doofus who sneeZed at the diner but with Ebola that seems so much more possible.

Basically aids hit a small not so easy to scare demographic when Ebola is hitting everyone.

I understand your rightful outrage but that's modern fear porn. If it effects the old ladies and the little babies its gonna cause a tizzy.

Why would they ask that if you just called their office? Thats spooky, either they are trying to look like they are on top of everything or… they are somewhat concerned about a wider spread than what they are letting on about.

I am sure its the looking good part. They know information like that will spread.

The police call our house once in a while, too. They aren't looking for crime, they just want money.

Yeah, 'cause EVERYBODY tells the truth ALL the time. Like Mr. Duncan.

I worked on Ebola related stuff at work today. If work thinks there is a potential need for it, then people all over are scared.

You might be reading too much into this.

Your Orthopedist was probably doing what's best for you, fevers can hurt anyone with osteoarthritis or another bone ailment and it would be only natural for your doc to ask if you've been suffering from a fever.

OP is not reading too much into it if you take the whole story into account.

As an aside that bolsters your point, figures for annual "regular" flu deaths in the US is around about 43,000 people. See:

Well that's exactly my point. What if he did have a fever and didn't realize it and we just said no. They did not even take his temperature to verify what we said was accurate. It just shows that apparently all you have to do is say no like Duncan did. This is what scares me. The incompetence of some people is astounding.

This countries hubris will certainly be it's downfall

You are right and you are wrong. I am not afraid of Ebola I am afraid of the people freaking out. The world has changed since the 80s we are all connected with instant info...... unlimited info. When stories like this happen it just keeps building and building and only the disease being cured outright will stop the frenzy.

If this reaches into the 10,000 of cases it will cause panic on a large scale. Think I am crazy look at the boom in the prepping world in the last couple of years. People are on the edge of their seats.

YES>>>>!! That's the word!
Hubris!!
The whole outbreak is either a planned event or they are acting with great unbounded hubris!
Thanks for that....my altimers wouldn't let it pop up in my vocabulary today......
And further to that....you are right on the money........
With 100 acute infectious hospital beds available US wide.....the worst case scenario is just around the corner......
People who find they have contracted Ebola will NOT do what they are expecting them to do....!!!!
They'll cut and run, they'll go home to say goodbye, they'll crawl off to die, or whatever.....but many will not think of the uninfected masses when they know their time is short....and 70% chance of death is pretty powerful stimulus......
Comeon people now.....what would YOU DO?

Malaria has fever like symptoms.

Dengue fever obviously has fever like symptoms.

There are number of afflictions that have fever like symptoms. Like a fever for instance.

But it does seem like overkill, I will admit that. But at a certain time of year when other viruses are going about it's only natural for those in a practice to ask the obvious questions. When people are fretting about Ebola they are forgetting about the other nasty infections such as meningococcal.

at the rate we are going we will have almost half a million new cases of ebola per year. if we can't cure people, then a minimum of 250,000 will die each year and each of those people will have died within 30 days of contracting the disease.

this is not the same as AIDS. if it doesn't burn itself out or if we don't find a cure or we don't develop a vaccine..... that's a million people dead every 4 years with the current projected number of 10,000 new cases each week (from what the WHO said today).

AIDS was and is a horrible horrible disease. i don't want to down play the tragedy that is AIDS but right now we need to do something to stop ebola.
