The way it is

If you give a mouse a cookie,
He'll just want another one,
He'll never really be satisfied,
Until he has them all and you have none.

A simple lesson to be learned,
No reason for you to be concerned.
That is just the way things go,
A truth that everyone already knows.

If you give a man a dollar,
He'll just want another one,
He'll never really be satisfied,
Until he has them all and you have none.

I thought it would be obvious,
That this is just the way it is.
That we are all selfish in some way,
No matter what role in life we play.

If you give a child some candy,
He will offer to share with you.
And if there was only enough for one,
He would tear the piece in two.

Maybe we should take our queue,
From those coming into the world anew.
They seem to understand a little better,
That we're all in this life together.

Thanks,

That's pretty. It makes me hug my inner-child.

I like that a lot ..

I had a dream last night and I looked up the meaning and one meaning said I may need to tap into my inner child.. I know that would be a good thing.
As adults we forget to appreciate the little things sometimes.
Thanks for sharing your beautifully written poem.
Have a great day x

Your children are Angels. Kids in my family aren't like that at all. My father used to have to beat my brother and I senseless just to keep us from killing one another or firebombing the neighbors, and that only acted to temporarily unite us against him. There was no sharing, only brutality. Our favorite game growing up was whipping each other until one of us wimped out. We were both so stubborn and idiotic that we'd end up with bruises, welts, blisters and open wounds on our legs because neither of us wanted to relent. We used to freeze paintballs and go after each other in the back yard just to make things interesting. The accuracy was greatly diminished, but it really added something to the game.

Well, you think, we come from a Scottish bloodline, and if you look at all the things the Scots did to one another for fun during peacetime, it makes sense that we were that way. The only soft spot either of us had in our heart was for our younger sister, and that was partly because my dad made his stance on her very clear from day one and somewhere deep down inside ourselves we knew beyond a doubt that our lives were forfeit were we to annoy her.

Another awesome poem!

It's so much easier to go thorough life being selfish but so much more gratifying to put other people first.

To see the life through a child's eyes...if only!

Well done. Well shared.

Maybe we're nicer before life beats the heck out of us.
