The opposition leader in the Ukrainian crisis Viktor Yushchenko appears to have survived an attempt to poison him last September. The attempt left his face disfigured and covered with cysts and lesions. The information has come from a doctor who treated Yushchenko. Specialists in Britain, the United States and France have all looked at samples and have helped establish that it was a biological, chemical, or poison agent that afflicted him on the presidential campaign.

LONDON (AFP) - Ukraine's opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko was poisoned in an attempt to kill him during election campaigning in September, a British daily reported, quoting the doctor who oversaw his treatment.

Doctors at Vienna's Rudolfinerhaus clinic are within days of identifying the substance that left Yushchenko's face disfigured with cysts and lesions, Doctor Nikolai Korpan was quoted as telling The Times in a telephone interview.

Specialists in Britain, the United States and France had helped to establish that it was a biological agent, a chemical agent or, most likely, a rare poison that struck him down in the run-up to the presidential election, he said.

Doctors needed to examine Yushchenko again at the clinic in Vienna to confirm their diagnosis but were in no doubt that the substance was administered deliberately, he was quoted as saying.

Wow, the election in the Ukraine gets more and more strange everyday. How much do you want to bet that if they trace this agent back the trail lead them to the doorstep of the Russians new KGB? They specialized in this sort of thing in the cold war, and I have no doubt that the knowledge is sitting in some dusty file somewhere.

The article said they were within days of identifying the subsatance. If indeed its something "exotic" then alot of fingers will be pointing towards Putin and Russia

These type of things have also been faked before. In Taiwan, I believe, one of the politicians, successfully faked an assasination attempt to get the sympathy vote. It could be a similar dirty trick in Ukraine. We are back to the old cold war, again. The opposition guy is being backed by Washington, and the other guy is being backed by Moscow.

Although, I suppose if they just destabilize the country, it may suit certain country's goals. The installation of a friendly leader may only be a secondary priority for Washington. I don't think Putin will easily cede Ukraine, since it is right next ot Russia. Although, it appears the US may be able to win this one.

Anything is possible I suppose. However, man you must really want the job to risk death like that. His symptoms and condition were confirmed by a major hospital in Austria.

I doubt it, have you seen what it has done to the Guy??

The one on the left is in July 2004, and on the right in November...he has lesions all over his body, pancreas and liver, and has crippling pain in his spine.....doubt it is faked, unless he was a really brave man!

wow I had not really payed attention to the beofer and after. My money is on a Russian connection. If he did this to himslef, he is plane nuts. His condition could not be faked and they went to a name hospital in another country.

From a profession opinion, His liver is still not well looking at the yellowish tinge and he may be having some caridac issues.

It's Russia.

Before the offical results had been announced Putin 'phoned Yanukovich and congratulated him on his victory. OOPS!
Said victory was ruled invalid by the Supreme Court.
After actively campaigning for the Kuchma/Yanukovich camp Putin tells Europe and the US that it is a domestic Ukrainian affair and they should all mind their own business.

Now he's been forced into a backdown and said he will work with whoever the new president is after the re-run of the second round.

Given Russia's history of opressing the Ukrainians it's not surprising they want Yuschenko.
Given Russia's history of losing its "empire" it's not surprising they'd resort to poison in what they think is their own backyard.
Given Putin's personal history, well, what do you expect?

The hospital is set to announce the results of test to determine what has caused the illness in Viktor Yushchenko. Some medical experts are speculating that Dioxin may be the culprit.

VIENNA (Reuters) - An Austrian hospital says it has determined the cause of a mysterious illness afflicting Ukrainian opposition presidential hopeful Viktor Yushchenko and plans to announce the details at a news conference on Saturday.

Yushchenko, who faces Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich later this month in a re-run of November's rigged election, arrived at Vienna's Rudolfinerhaus hospital on Friday evening.

He is to undergo further tests into the illness he says was the result of a failed attempt to assassinate him by poisoning. The illness incapacitated him earlier in the presidential campaign and has left his face bloated and pock-marked.
Hospital
