They often came together and formed their own ethnic neighborhoods where they could live and interact according to their own culture and in their own language

there's nothing wrong with that....because they're citizens. they're paying taxes, and contributing to the system, and doing their part.

i think we're all talking about illegals...

-checks OP, and early posts- yup, we're talking about illegals....

Right, but you called them "foreign invaders".

I think I got the right sized shoe.

i call them that, because that's what they are, and i don't like to mince words.

but they're not an organized military force, so they're not invaders, in the colloquial sense...they're invaders, in that they "to enter as if to take possession"(Like in a home invasion). or "to intrude upon"(like an invasion of privacy)

they are here, unwelcomed, uninvited by the people of this country, they do us harm, they intrude upon our country....they are invaders by every definition of the word.

again, they're not boogiemen to be feared..they are invaders, to be resented.

No, Night Star was talking about immigrants of the past but they get a free pass on everything you seem to be complaining about. Guess it isn't that big a deal after all.

All I see is a double standard. One group can choose not to learn english and integrate but the other group does the same and it makes you mad.

really? that's all you've got?

The term, much like doomporn, is a figure of speech, sometimes used to identify the bad guys. In this case a group of invaders.

there's no double standard....

in your example, a community of foreign immigrants will speak their native tongue....a lot of them more than likely learned english, because that's the common language in the country they immigrated to....but when they're around folks from "the old country", they speak that language...no harm there....and, of course, there's gonna be members of that community who are too old to pick up english, or don't have the mind for it...that's understandable...

so we have one group that learned, and one that refuses to learn, and insists we learn THEIR language instead...

no double standard.

They insist that you learn their language? I don't think you have shown that.

Of course there are groups like La Raza who might have a goal that resembles that, at least for part of the US, but they are mostly US citizens and that isn't what we are talking about, right?

The general disagreement I have here is that I think that it's adventitious for more Americans to be multilingual. You can't keep the idea up that everyone that comes here must conform to the radical right wing's idea of what America should be. Do you understand why the GOP is loosing the Latino vote? It's because the GOP's steadfast refusal to understand global economics. Large corporations understand this, and they pay a premium for a person who is multilingual to work for them starting out the gate.

Americans can no longer think that multilingualism is a hardship, but instead need to see it as an opportunity to bring back America's exceptionalism. Americans need to be viewed upon the worlds business stage as the top of the top. Understanding not only business practices in multiple regions of the world but also cultural nuances that help smooth business relationships.

That's the downfall of the rank and file of the conservative hierarchy. Thinking that stern refusal to adapt to an ever changing world is going to do anything but make those that do so obsolete in the world.

And to continue to see people who are from other parts of the world who have difficulty or who cannot speak English must therefore be here illegally, (The hypocracy of conservatives who say that people from other countries refuse to learn OUR language, when it's not even OUR language to begin with but ENGLAND's language always cracks me up.) is only going to degrade the GOP party platform into obscurity.

Believe it or not, Social Conservatism is dying. Nationalism is an outmoded concept in a world economy, American's aren't Übermensch we don't need another Kristallnacht. This country needs to focus on Fiscal Conservatism, reigning in insane redundant spending, culling over-inflated military and governmental bureaucratic budgets, and starting to put our great fortune to making America an economic and industrial powerhouse once again.

We certainly aren't going to do that with outmoded ideas of a Endlösung to the "illegal problem", what will bring about change in our "porous boarder troubles" is ending the amnesty companies and landowners currently enjoy for employing and housing undocumented workers. Also ending the ludicrous war on drugs and instead of forcing cartels to hide in the shadows and be violent, turn them into legitimate importers, ending prohibition stole from the mob a huge cash cow that was the bootlegging of liquor, the same could be done with the drug war. Obviously Americans want these products, otherwise Cartels wouldn't be as rich as they are. So, ending the drug war would disable this cash cow for them, and bring Mexico some much needed home grown jobs.

We're all foreigners. When should we have started closing the borders and looking after our own? I guess 1776 cause we had problems then too. Should we kick out the new arrivals? I think Guohau should go. Why are we wasting resources on her when so many Americans of British ancestry are hurting? Let's kick out everyone who immigrated since WWII. They must have brought us down.

What you're missing and what has always been advocated by anyone over the insane amount of illegals here is she went through the process, beginning to end. You should be proud of her, her accomplishment, and her families desire to do things legally. She didn't sneak across our border and become another taxpayer dependent. That is seriously short sighted of you.

America isn't accommodating #. We've never gone to war to help anyone. It's selfish every time. You guys really think we're in the middle East or west Africa out of compassion?

You need to go back to that top 40 college and take a little more history.

Also who the # is forcing you to speak Spanish? I've never heard of any place in America where you MUST speak Spanish. God the short sighted self centered completely disconnected viewpoints just don't stop........ Can't any of you see the big picture? Do you know anything about history? The exact same bs you guys spew happened with every immigrant group. After a generation the kids are as american as apple pie. I have clients who are immigrants and trust me, our corrupt culture sucks in everyone.

You're losing it Travi, the first to go is always the language. lol I had Legal immigrant clients as well they made it, all were wealthy one even walked out of Russia with 50 bucks in his pocket came here 12 years ago. Whats your excuse? He never blamed the US just went to work driving a cab, saved money and put a down on a house, refied bought a business and made a fortune.

Keep blaming immigrants for problems. They did it in the 1800s and 1900s too. It's not immigrants that our causing our decline. It's our corrupt business and politics plus a culture of hedonism with no morality (real morality not Christian pseudo morality). Every failing culture in all of history tried to go back to its roots at the end. Muslims are doing the same thing right now, going back to outdated traditions to escape feelings of powerlessness.

They are illegal aliens not immigrants when you understand the difference maybe it will all make sense to you. Now you compare the US to the Muslims? I don't think I will allow you to influence my basis for morality your moral compass seems to be pointing in an odd direction.

The way forward is not in going backward. It's never worked. We are Rome. Research the fall of Rome. We gotta try something new.

she came here the right way, became a citizen, follows the rules, pays her taxes, contributes to the system, and is (hopefully) a productive member of society....what more could be asked of her?

Yeah but those legal channels are extremely difficult as I pointed out and her husband confirmed. So all these people living in violence and poverty ridden communities should worry about our laws when we caused most of their problems? The # of refugees allowed from Central America is 5000-8000. 8000 is the maximum legally possible for these people.

I'm not saying she should leave. I'm saying that the lack of compassion for people in need or at least the tiniest bit of taking responsibility for our problems in foreign policy, economically, politically or militarily is just sickening.

Americans have this attitude where everything we do is perfectly right. We've never made mistakes ever. Every problem we caused in other countries is their problem. You see the same uninformed self centered arguments in how we deal with Muslims.

I'm just really really tired of Americans with absolutely no understanding of history pretending we are some kind of faultless utopia. If we haven't turned Latin America (our declared turf based on the Monroe doctrine which no one seems to remember) into a #hole for slightly cheaper bananas and Coca Cola and such, they wouldn't be coming here. I'm really sorry you guys are focusing on the hyperbole in my arguments over the points.

We're all foreigners except the native Americans. My ancestors showed up at Ellis Island and came in legally because our laws allowed illegal immigrants to become legal upon entering.

Where the # is the Ellis Island for Latin Americans? Answer : there isn't one. There's no way any of these people to enter legally. So either fix their countries so they don't need to come or allow them to be legal citizens when they show u . Otherwise you're all basically saying to these people, "our continued greed and comfort is more important than your children's well being".

Empathy is just dead in America. You're all so spoiled you can't even see past your own noses. Sorry that Pedro took that lawn mowing job you wouldn't do anyways, but he wants his children to bit starve to death this winter. All I hear on every issue people bring up on this forum and in real life and on mainstream media is that just because we use more resources than some continents to preserve a lifestyle of complete and utter insanity doesn't mean we should have to care for other human beings.

We can all argue online in compete safety and with tons of material possessions because people elsewhere suffer for it. Most of the planet suffers while you bask in extreme abundance and every time they complain you tell them to stfu. The selfishness and lack of empathy in America is disgusting. Go watch Super Sweet 16 or Real Housewives of Anywhere America and tell me that these children should starve or get murdered or raped so we can be a nation of such extreme mental illness we make ancient Rome look like saints. Can't wait for the defensive responses. Americans are incapable of taking blame for anything. We're the greatest country that ever existed............

Whoever caused their problems should help fix those problems. We have citizens who live in violent communities and are poverty ridden. There are areas where children can't play in their own backyards for fear of being shot or raped or sliced up with a knife. Where is their help? There are people in some areas of the world where people are starving to death. Where is their help? We can have compassion and love for people all over the world, but we can't save the world. Sadly, governments and corporations care more about wars and money than they do the quality of human lives.

Americans have this attitude where everything we do is perfectly right. We've never made mistakes ever.

That is unfair and untrue. Not all Americans think like that. There are good and bad people all over the world.
