An audit recently completed by the IG has found that the Air Force has failed to justify the 401 MQ-9 Reapers, worth approximately $77B. They were attempting to get permission from the Joint Requirements Oversight Committee to increase the number of aircraft procured. A statement released about the audit said they risked spending approximately $8.8B on 46 aircraft they didn't need.

The audit also said they failed to maintain "consistent, complete, and verifiable" records to determine the proper number of aircraft required. They are complete another analysis to determine the cost and numbers requirement.

The U.S. Air Force didn’t justify its plans to buy a total of 401 MQ-9 Reaper drones worth about $77 billion, according to a report on a Pentagon Inspector General audit.

Officials with the service’s Air Combat Command, which is headed by Gen. Gilmary Hostage and based at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, failed to get approval from the Joint Requirements Oversight Council for an increase in procurement quantity of the Reaper unmanned aircraft, according to the summary document released Wednesday.

They also didn’t maintain “consistent, complete and verifiable” records for determining the proper number of the General Atomics-made drone — which is a bigger, more lethal version of the MQ-1 Predator, the report states.

Why does one of these cost close to 200 million dollars each or is my math off.

That is an awful lot of money for one drone.

I would want them gold plated for that sort of money.

Their coating and paint probably cost more than the equivalent amount in gold.

The paint costs $60.00 per can. The other 3.2 Million is the profit margin.

The whole Defense Industry bleeds citizens dry.

Hummm maybe it is time to start getting bids from India or China... Iran could probably put something together for less than a couple of million.. India can get to Mars at 1/10th maybe 1/20th the cost of the USA getting into orbit with their Russian engines..

The whole game sucks and is nothing but a rip-off. Stuff is purchased at prices that are stupid.. The little ashtray in the seat arm of the older commercial aircraft used to cost 35 USD and could be mass produced for about $1.50 each. I would not be surprised if the same ashtray on a military transport cost close $350.. Maybe a little over board but; $500 dollar hammers and 800 dollar toilet seats for the old 141 star lifter should have made everyone say," Up your and screw this" we ain't paying.

Waste is not the word for some of these programs..

You REALLY think those cost that much? Of course they don't, and it's not waste. How else do you think the black world gets paid for? They're required to budget everything, including classified programs. Once you put out that you're asking for a certain amount for classified programs, then people that know what they're doing can start to build pictures. Just random dots at first, but eventually it can get pretty accurate after three or four years.

Now throw in some "overruns" on various programs, and wallah, you have three hidden SAPs paid for, no one the wiser.

Lol, yes you are right.

Didn't India get to Mars for less than the US pays for a single reaper.

That is an amusing little thought. It demonstrates profit margins quite nicely.

Oh god yes!

Black projects!

So much for a Government by the people, for the people.

So let me see.

They lie and cheat in the first place.
They make obscene profits.
They build things that no one knows about, secret things.
Then they expect everyone to be OK with this.

Not this little black duck.

Black projects and classification are necessary. It would be awesome if we knew everything, but it isn't going to happen.

Even so - the "flyaway" price quoted on wiki is only $17 million each.......$183 million each for ground stations, etc??

Nah...don't think so!!

ETA" the "Programme cost" on wiki is $12 Billion for about 100 units currently - about $120 million each amortised cost...what was the requested number - 400 for $77 Billion???? something REALLY doesn't add up there!!

"Programme cost" generally includes a given amount of spares (including very expensive engines) and parts over a certain amount of time, contractor support and contractor maintenance. Sometimes planned overhauls at X-many hours are included in a programme. Sometimes includes later upgrades to the fleet and/or upgrades to airframes that were bought in a previous purchase. Plus, new payloads or sensors to be integrated. Plus the R&D for those upgrades. In this case it'll include all the new ground stations which aren't cheap, either.
It all gets lumped into program cost.

www.bga-aeroweb.com...

"Flyaway cost subtotal includes Ground Control Stations (GCS), Ground Data Terminals (GDTs), and Predator Primary Satellite Links (PPSLs) which are not procured in the same quantities as aircraft. Thus, the unit flyaway cost will fluctuate from year to year as different quantities of GCSs, GDTs, and PPSLs are procured.
MQ-9 Reaper procurement includes all components of the MQ-9 weapon system. The basic MQ-9 Reaper system consists of the aircraft, sensors, a GCS, communications equipment, weapon kits, support equipment, simulator and training devices, Readiness Spares Packages (RSP), technical data/training, and personnel required to operate, maintain, and sustain the system."

Funding never works that way. It can come out of a black budget or discretionary funding, but it is never done that way. It'd be a good (and easy) way to go to jail.

Exactly ! What a way to run a ???? procurement program.. The money darn sure is going someplace unless it is paying the salaries of the military program heads that will have a nice revolving door to private industry.. Even then it is feather bedding for something?

If I became Emperor (nothing less would do so relax everyone is safe) there are so many ways to drain the bilges of the ship of state to get it back on an even keel one has to wonder where you would start... Not being assassinated would be right up there at the top of the list though ..yes sir rebob.

I know this runs counter in some ways to your original point which I concur with, but in the big picture the Military is sending us a clear message AND warning when they openly say a hammer costs 500$ simply because they define and illustrate in their own defense of this cost the PROCESS that artificially "ceates" 500$ worth of value, documented value from a 5$ hammer.

This is the EXACT process TPTB use to screw the entire Global Population.

This Military endorsed artificially inflated value which is generateing peripheral fiscal impacts that are so high they are off the charts is what TPTB do to consumers and the method is their bread and butter.

Waste is not the word for some of these programs..

And that has stopped exactly how many people? I can count on one hand the number of people that have gone to jail over government contracts.
