I do not feel safe in trusting the CDC to contain this.

Who else?
Please, by all means, spend a few billion $'s on a new government agency you personally feel capable of doing this, more so than the leading Disease Control agency in the world. Give it a go, I'm sure you'll manage.

I do not feel safe knowing they couldn't keep it from entering our country from across an entire ocean. Am I to trust they can now stop it from crossing the street?

Do you think an Ebola infection comes with an immediate stamp on the forehead advertising the fact? Do you imagine he walked through the airport like a character from a Hollywood movie, sweating all over and vomiting on people?

Get a grip. This is not a movie, this is one guy getting off a plane then feeling a little under the weather. What do you expect the CDC to do, hire psychics to try to "guess" who might be infected?

I also do not feel relaxed at the fact that its just "one" person as people keep saying. Its one person we were warned could eventually come to infect America. Well its verified now that it has happened. In under a handful of weeks this has happened.

All probability was that this would happen. It was likely that someone traveling from these regions would go to the US at some point, and as Ebola doesn't result in a big neon sign above an infected person advertising it, it was inevitable. Well done you for being lucky enough to be born in a country that DOES have the systems in place to monitor, treat and deal with this, far more effectively than any other nation in the world.

How many more are on the way? How many more will this man infect?

This man will likely not infect anyone else now that he's in quarantine and being treated, that's what quarantine means after all.
As for how many more are "on the way", who knows? Maybe it will just be him? Maybe there will be another. They will be treated too, and the public will be protected from an infection that ONLY PASSES THROUGH BODILY FLUIDS.

I'm not a doom-porn lover, but I do not feel "at ease" with this news as so many "cool headed folks" seem to be.

You don't feel at ease because you don't know enough about this virus, or the circumstances, or the methods of the CDC. If you do, then you're rejecting the facts in favor of creating a personal panic, which I think does indeed make you a doom porn lover.

Don't panic...of course don't panic. But don't be lulled to sleep by the people who brush off every scary report because they think its hip and smart to call every approaching scare as "doom porn".

MM

So what's your solution? You say don't brush it off (using facts, science, reality and common sense) but what is your alternative? How much control do you have over this?

Your solution seems to be to either use common sense and don't panic, or... PANIC!

You seem to wanna down play the virus a bit. Let's not forget that the virus has just jumped land masses so it is currently in a state of growth. Hopefully it will play out soon but now it is becoming a real danger and that level of danger was not present last year. It went from over there to over here. The best case is that we are able to stop it but now that is not what is happening.

Wrong.
The USA is the leading nation in the rankings for Guns per capita, NOT any one of the several African nations.

why don't you people study blood electrification, colloidal silver, ozone bagging as treatments against ebola?
vast amount of information on the net.

Right, because the global medical field are idiots compared to a random blog monkey on the internet coming up with voodoo "treatments". Lets ignore the fact that we would still be dealing with thousands of long ago cured and wiped out diseases were it not for these HIGHLY TRAINED medical professionals, scientists, and biologists.

Put your faith in a random stranger on the net and ignore the people who ACTUALLY CURE THINGS.

Why don't you people study actual science and trust those who have spent their lives actually curing diseases with proven methods based in decades of research and development?

Not too long ago, a MSM reporter went to West Africa, donned a hazmat suit, and explained that not one inch of a health worker's skin could be exposed. The virus can find its way through micro-breaks in the skin. Fast forward to October 1st . An Ebola patient turned up in a Dallas ER, etc. And the talking heads are telling the masses not to fret; Ebola is only transferred by body fluids. Nevermind that the virus can live for days on the handrail at any airport in any nation. It can live on gurneys, chairs, ink pens, cots, etc.
It just seems a bit confusing, sort of like the movie Chinatown. I'm her sister, I'm her daughter! It's contagious. It's not all that contagious.

BS medical science has not cured thousands of virsus's. That is a very ignorant statement. At best you will have a hard time making the case for even one cure.

Ah, so now, because I use common sense and disagree with your opinion, you're going to claim that I'm some kind of "government agent"?
It's a very easy retort isn't it? Someone disagrees with me, so they're "in on it!!!!11111oneoneoneone"

Yet more evidence that you don't know what you're talking about, sorry to be blunt.

1976 - England
1989 - USA
1990 - USA
1989-1990 - Philippines
1992 - Italy
1996 - South Africa
1996 - USA
1996 - Russia
2004 - Russia
2008 - Philippines

These are just a few of the instances of Ebola outside of the currently infected countries, and none of them led to "mass outbreaks and millions of deaths"

Lets also not forget that the treatment of this virus and a cure for it too have been in development over the last few months like never before. Prior to this current outbreak we saw instances of it in numerous nations which NEVER led to what people here are imagining is going to happen this time. And this was long before we had a verifiable treatment method and a cure in progress.

So, again, people can calm down and use facts and science to end this nonsense doom-porn. This is NOT the end of the world, it's NOT an apocalypse, imagining the worst possible scenario is NOT a "reasonable" or "rational" response to have.

I know this is not going to change much of anything here, because so many people seem to use ATS to fapp themselves senseless over ridiculous nonsense, but at least some the members here are sensible enough to know better.

I'm already right, because we have a conservative right here on this thread who has told me she would rather risk catching ebola than have her freedom to travel in the U.S. curtailed by the government. I am a liberal who would rather have my freedom to travel curtailed temporarily than to risk the spread of ebola to me and my family.

You didn't read my reply carefully.

I said if liberals/progressives/Democrats complain

that their rights are curtailed
by a - I agree - it might be necessary quarantine

then I am right. You are saying they will not complain, only conservatives would complain, I disagree with that assumption.

a reply to: dizzie56 I'm sorry this seams so unreal, i live in portugal, until the 60´s 70´s we had a lot of colonies in Africa, so these days we receive in a daily bases people from all parts of Africa, and i'm talking about legal travelers, nort counting the ilegal ones that arrive by boat to all mediterranean shore (Italy, Spain...). Europe is invaded by African illegals every day! We dont have not one suspected ebola patiente, in any of the mediterranean contries, we also so humanitary help in a lot of Africa #ries, we receive people in hospitals, and in universities. Soo, this is realy weirth, how come ebola gets to US first?? I'm very sorry but you (all) are very naive if you think that is a casual matter, 1 infected ebola patiente in the US???
Your government is playing you!

I have been following the back and forth between you guys/gals and truth be told I agree with both of you. Something I believe is different this time what that is I do not know. That being said I think panic is a bad idea at this point.

Panic is what worries me more than this terrible disease. When people panic in the US it will send shockwaves across the world. Markets will collapse and vital infrastructure will crumble in it's wake. People should have a supply of water and food just in case this does happen.

Everyone needs to stop panicking. When you panic you don't think clearly.
It's one case. I would be worried when more cases come out. I mean, yeah, he probably came into contact with a ton of people on his way back from Liberia, but isn't this only spread through bodily fluids? Unless he was showing symptoms while traveling, I would assume that his bodily fluids weren't going everywhere... Unless he was making out with every person on the flight, and licking seats and armrests, and handles and stuff.

I suppose i missed all the panic mentioned. I see it more as while driving a car sometimes you have to alter normal coarse in order to avoid a collision. The danger has presented itself so action is required in order to stay clear of risk. It is quite simple that if we start to see more cases in the area then steps need to be taken. If no one else gets sick then good job everyone. The next two weeks will tell the tale. As of now multiple people are on lock down and being monitered including some children.

Seeing as I didn't offer a solution or any reason to "panic" I find it odd you address my post as if I did.

You seem to be doing that to each and every level headed post showing concern while not seeking panic.

Weird.

Read my point again.
They could stop all flights in and out, but that would then mean stopping all flights from any other country accepting flights from these nations too, right?
You can stop all flights from African nations, but what about Europe? Russia? Asia?
Yes! Lets stop ALL FLIGHTS in or out of anywhere, end the airlines, put hundreds of thousands of people out of a job because you don't know the difference between Hollywood Sci-Fi and reality! lol

Wrong, you could stop all flights coming from West African nations and still keep the rest going. All you have to do is screen their passports and see where else they have been recently. Its not that hard, they tend to put a very identifiable stamp on your passport each and every time you enter a country. The people who come from other countries but just happened to make a stop in a west african country can easily be quarantined for a couple of weeks. Its not the first time the country has done this. Also, if we let the world know that we are going to be doing this you will see a MAJOR drop off of people coming here from W.A. countries via some other country. This isnt rocket science, its pretty basic actually.

Right, so now we're setting up internment camps in the USA? Yeah, that's sounds like a great idea considering the massive legal ramifications (that you, the tax payer, will have to deal with). Lets waste billions of $'s in an already struggling economy to set up massive open prisons. Great idea![/post]

I didnt say to put them in internment camps, I said quarantine them for a couple of weeks. I was giving an example of how it had been done before on a much larger scale when you had said that it COULDN'T BE DONE. Dont go off the deep end here, try to stay a little logical.

Also, I dont consider it fear mongering when a disease makes you bleed out of orifices that you never thought you would bleed out of. And there is NO cure for it as of yet. Its really not that treatable. The treatment is to drink/iv fluids as much as possible and cross your fingers right now...thats it. Well, besides the experimental drug that was taken by the dr. who went over to west africa and dosed himself as a last ditch effort. But even that isnt totally proven yet. Also with it being so spread out in west africa it has a great potential for mutation. I just rather take caution and this just gives me another reason not to go to texas.

Wrong on almost every count.
The Ebola virus IS treatable, and they are working on a vaccine that seems to actually be working very well. As stated (and as you completely ignored) African nations have far less infrastructure, far fewer medical staff, far less training and far less money to deal with this outbreak over a massive area, the same DOES NOT APPLY to the US.

How is the Ebola virus treatable? That vaccine you are talking about hasnt been put thru human trials yet so you are wrong. The only one to do so was the Dr. that so sick while treating people in africa from this crap and he took it as a last resort. The other treatment, according to the CDC themselves (www.cdc.gov...) is like I said, IV's and cross your damn fingers. In fact on this same page of the CDC it says and I quote "No specific vaccine or medicine (e.g., antiviral drug) has been proven to be effective against Ebola." In fact, its the first line, take your time and read it. Obviously you know little about how this virus works and what is done to treat it. I dont care what kind of infrastructure we have there is still no 100% ebola vaccine. I dont care what kind of staff we have, plugging an IV into me and hoping for the best isnt my brand of good medicine. Good medicine is based off of prevention and the best prevention is to check it at the door.

Honestly. You're telling me we have known about en ebola outbreak since May and not only have we not stopped flights from leaving the countries affected, but we don't even do screening for people when they arrive home? Not to mention, the man goes to the hospital and tells them HE JUST CAME BACK FROM LIBERIA..and they just go "meh...". Come on.
