This is Satan's very purpose for this sin. It is so repulsive that it drives people away. Certainly the children subjected to these atrocities will have a poor opinion of God. When the first thing that comes to mind when one sees a priest is pedophilia how successful can one imagine their efforts of evangelism will be?

They certainly aren't men of God. Just because someone claims to be of God does not make it so. As Jesus said to the priests of his era (The Pharisees):

You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. John 8:44

Regarding these Catholic priests I believe Jesus also had something to say:

But whoso shall cause one of these little ones who believe in Me to fall, it were better for him that a millstone were hung about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea. Matthew 18:6

It's a shame that Catholic clergy are not allowed to marry. If they were, this kind of crap would be greatly reduced, IMO.

Already addressed. Pedophilia is a sexual orientation. You can't change a heterosexual into a pedophile simply because of celibacy. It doesn't work that way.

that incidences of child rape and abuse IN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH, for crying out loud- should be exactly 0%.

The incidence of child rape and abuse should be 0% everywhere. But it's not.
USA stats to follow -
Info HERE

A 2004 U.S. Department of Education report reported that "the most accurate data available" reveals that "nearly 9.6 percent of [public school] students are targets of educator sexual misconduct sometime during their school career."
This result prompted Hofstra University's Dr. Charol Shakeshaft, the author of the study, to opine in 2006, "[T]hink the Catholic Church has a problem? The physical sexual abuse of students in schools is likely more than 100 times the abuse by priests."

If anyone believes that priests offend at a higher rate than teachers or non-celibate clergy, then they should produce the evidence on which they are basing that conclusion. I know of none. Saying 'everybody knows' does not constitute scientific methodology." – Dr. Philip Jenkins, Pennsylvania State University.

According to CARA, here are the numbers of accusations involving a current minor that were even deemed "credible" each year from 2005 to 2013:

2013 - 10
2012 - 6
2011 - 7
2010 - 8
2009 - 6
2008 - 10
2007 - 4
2006 - 14
2005 - 9

Meanwhile, according to government numbers, in the single year of 2010 alone, there were some 63,527 reported cases of child sexual abuse in the United States – an alarming societal problem that has received very little media attention.

Pedophiles find hunting grounds everywhere. They enter the Catholic priesthood, they enter the Protestant clergy and the ranks of the schools teachers as well. They were pedophiles BEFORE they took these positions. Like any predator, they hide their true nature in order to hunt. This is a predator problem and it is in any place that has children trusting adults and having to be subjected to adult authority.

I was raised in an evangelical home, to fundamentalist parents.

We were and much of my family and friends still believe that the only way to God is through Jesus and the "blood of the lamb," that all other paths are deception by Satan, that the only way to true wisdom and goodness is salvation and the holy spirit coming into you, that you will be a hopeless sinner without it, etc. How many times has an orthodox Catholic or Christian told me or stated in public that all of that is true in some sense, that Christianity and holy spirit will = more empowered and more jesus-like than any other path?

In my life, I have yet to see any evidence for any of this. The entire hypothesis is wrong. There is zero evidence on average that Christians, even born-again or orthodox Catholic are any more meritorious or aware. In fact, I often find that orthodox Christians of any kind are actually less aware, less educated, and often haven't worked through their own childhood issues through psychology or meditation. Add into that suppression of such things as sexuality, especially homosexuality or outside of marriage, and how can they possibly have worked through their inner worlds?

As to the pedophilia, this is just one more example for me.

However, it's unclear whether it is due to some kind of sexual repression over a lifetime, which is dangerous, or something else.

A former Vatican archbishop accused of paedophilia stored tens of thousands of child porn videos and photos on a computer in his office at the Holy See diplomatic compound in the Dominican Republic, it has emerged.

Details of Jozef Wesolowski's massive child porn stash have been revealed after the 66-year-old was arrested at the Vatican earlier this week.

He is the highest-ranking Vatican official ever to be investigated for sex abuse, and the first top papal representative to receive a defrocking sentence. He has been charged with sexually abusing minors and child porn possession and might face up to seven years in the Vatican's tiny jail.

Vatican detectives analysed the PC Wesolowski used in his office in Santo Domingo, where he served as Holy See envoy from 2008 to 2012 as part of an investigation into the alleged sexual abuse of underage boys.

www.ibtimes.co.uk...

Some 160 videos showing teenage boys forced to perform sexual acts on themselves and on adults and more than 86,000 pornographic photos were meticulously archived in several category-based folders, the paper said.

So here we go again, with another boy-toy scandal infecting the Catholic ranks. What is it with these people?

Categories?
I'm not EVEN going to go there.

I spent some years in the DR, so this hits a little harder to me. Having been there, I can easily see how some youth would be lured into doing this for small sums of money. When you are so poor that there is nothing to do but hunt with slingshots for food, and follow tourists around begging for a peso- any chance to earn money, even doing THAT, is welcome. SAD, but true. In some parts of the DR, it is no better than the starvation and poverty in Africa. I can say that cause I've been there. In Santo Domingo, the capital, things may be a bit better, but on the streets that mentality still prevails. It is survival, pure and simple.

Blasted be these archbishops that would take advantage of such a situation to gratify themselves. Sickening.

Eh, with all due respect, I've seen a lot of horrific behavior from many of the most "Christian" people out there. George Bush claimed to be a Christian but tortured people and killed 200,000 civilians in Iraq.

Of all of the women I have dated, the only one who cheated on me fully was a born-again Christian who goes to church 2-3 times a week. I'm not impressed to say the least by Christians and their "fruit of the spirit."

Now, what does it say of the largest single denomination in the world that one of it's leaders does something corrupt? I suppose the same thing it says when a Republican, a Democrat, a President, an Attorney General, the Superindendent of a school district, or any one else does a despicable act.

I hear ya Charles, but you do have to realize when a person, group of people, or the leadership of an institution takes the moral high ground, and claims to be gods representatives on earth. People naturally hold them to a much higher standard. Perhaps, even an unrealistic one. And we aren't talking about one, but rather thousands of cases. So it really does give the Catholic church a black eye, and a fat lip. Add to that, the alleged cover-ups, and they've taken quite a beating for a group that is supposed to be the salt of the earth.
As a Catholic, and a xtian, you understand concepts the average person doesn't. All they see is an institution that claims to have a corner on the market when it comes to morality, and the answers to all of lifes most pressing questions. It isn't an easy position for you, and you certainly are not going to be able to flash educate every one who doesn't understand what you have studied for many years to comprehend.

Personally, I think FF put it simply and succinctly in her last post...

FF, you might want to look up the definition of sexual orientation. It does not include pedophiles.

wiki has huge articles on both sexual orientation:
en.wikipedia.org...

Sexual orientation is an enduring personal quality that inclines people to feel romantic or sexual attraction (or a combination of these) to persons of the opposite sex or gender, the same sex or gender, or to both sexes or more than one gender. These attractions are generally subsumed under heterosexuality, homosexuality, and bisexuality,[1][2] while asexuality (the lack of sexual attraction to others) is sometimes identified as the fourth category.

It does not include age as a criteria.

and Pedophilia:
en.wikipedia.org...

Pedophilia or paedophilia is a psychiatric disorder in which an adult or older adolescent experiences a primary or exclusive sexual attraction to prepubescent children, generally age 11 years or younger. As a medical diagnosis, specific criteria for the disorder extends the cut-off point for prepubescence to age 13.[1][2][3][4] A person who is diagnosed with pedophilia must be at least 16 years of age, but adolescents who are 16 years of age or older must be at least five years older than the prepubescent child before the attraction can be diagnosed as pedophilia.

I don't usually read stuff like that, but I couldn't wrap my brain around this idea you are selling that pedophilia is a sexual orientation, so I went and looked them both up.

I will also say that it is rare that ATS members change my views, but it does happen. And it did in this case thanks to research presented here, as well as further reading of my own on the subject. I will apologize for the comment "What is it with these people?" in the OP, which did tend to lump sum all Catholics into this too much. So I no longer hold the view that Catholics as whole perpetrate these atrocities more than any other group. If anything, the rate seems to be less, according to studies.

Nonetheless, it is still inexcusable for an Archbishop.

Religion: a set of ideals or commandments followed by people who rarely take them seriously and punish anyone they think disobeys, even if they are not part of the same group.

The only difference between religion and government is that Big brother gets an upgrade to Big Daddy and gains a lot more abilities like: Bull# (max level), Persecution (level 69) and intolerance (hacked to level 999).

a reply to: Meee32

Dear Meee32,

I have a significant writing problem that has been noted previously. I'm not sure how best to repair it, but it seems to have blocked my attempt to present my thoughts, at least to you.

Hahahah So wait a second here pal! You are trying to say because we find CHILD abuse as sick and disgusting because well... IT IS! That we are somehow WORSE than a child abuser!

Not at all. You misunderstand completely. I, too, condemned child abuse in my posts:

This is an illegal and sinful act for anyone to be doing. For a priest to be doing it, it's especially bad. Hypocrisy is too light a term. He should have understood the eternal consequences as well as the legal ones. I expect he'll serve the toughest sentence allowable by law, and that's fine with me.

And, I wrote more along those lines in this thread. We are agreed that child abuse is terrible, and that punishment should be severe. Where you stop following me, is his motive, his mentality, what drove him to such a terrible act. What I am pointing out is that he allowed a wrong, a sinful desire, to control his behavior and lead him to commit acts which are deeply sinful as well as illegal.

But lust isn't the only vice that leads to problems on earth and in eternity. So, to keep things simple, does hatred. Look in your own heart. What was it that caused you to write as you did. You certainly weren't being reasonable toward me. You were condemning me without any knowledge whatever. Your attack on MoonBlossom was even more despicable.

I have never said that anyone here was worse than a child abuser. In the eyes of the law, posters here have done nothing wrong. But, in your hearts (and in my heart, but in a different way) we are as bad as a child abuser, a murderer, rapist, or any other person who allows their heart to become corrupted and then act on that corrupted desire.

People have allowed hate to take over, at least temporarily, their hearts in this thread. They have acted on it by writing and exposing that hatred to the world. If you call to Heaven that there should be no mercy, understanding, or possibilty of forgiveness for that man in the Courts of the Eternal, why should those people get mercy, understanding, or the hope of forgiveness for their acts?

You had every reason to know that I do not support any form of abuse, child or otherwise. I believe an apology to MoonBlossom and myself is in order. That would be a good first step in trying to control and defeat the hatred coming from your heart. If you can't manage that, try an apology just to MoonBlossom, then resolve to fight hatred as well as any other tendency toward the wrong you might have.

If you'll support my efforts at reforming the evil in my heart, I'll be grateful. If I can be of help to you, I'll do my best.

Then we can walk as brothers, together, trying to heal our damaged hearts and make them clean, as was intended from the beginning of time. "This has been willed where what is willed must be."

With respect,
Charles1952

Dear kazanoom,

Perhaps I have answered your post as well when I responded to Meee32. I must thank you for your relatively mild criticism (compared to his).

I may not have answered your question in my response to him, however. Let me give it a try.

Let's separate, for just a moment, the illegal and the immoral or sinful. Everyone, including myself, agrees that child abuse is seriously illegal and that severe legal penalties are deserved. I also believe that if someone violates the law, we should be sure that the law is obeyed and the proper punishment be inflicted. People who learn of an evil act should be angry and demand justice. Justice, after all, is one of God's characteristics. OK, is the legal side resolved?

As I mentioned earlier, Christ, in cleansing the Temple shows us that there is a holy anger which I think also applies to the violation of children. There is nothing wrong with hating any acts of abuse. I am not a moral teacher, but I would strongly recommend that all people hate evil and evil acts.

But if you're interested in the moral side of the issue, certainly it is immoral (or sinful) to know what God wants you to do in a certain situation, then intentionally and knowingly refuse to do it. We know that all sorts of ideas cross our minds. Some of them urge us to do things we know are wrong. Unfortunately, we sometimes act on those thoughts and perform immoral actions.

Some of those immoral actions have obvious immediate effects, child abuse, murder, etc. Some have effects we don't easily see. If we give a false, negative evaluation to an employee we don't like, who knows how that small lie will ripple across his career, his finances, his life and the life of his family.

But we don't even have to look at the size of consequences. It's football season, and every year maybe a dozen plays are nullified because the game video shows a runner to be just an inch out of bounds. Out of bounds by a mile, out of bounds by a yard, out of bounds by an inch, doesn't matter, the ball is stopped there.

Morality is a little bit like that. When you know what you're supposed to do, and don't do it, the ball's dead right there. Nobody cares how dramatic the out of bounds was, you're in or out. Letting hatred get the best of you, and taking action that releases or displays that hate, or even encouraging the hate to grow inside of you, is out of bounds.

That's why I'm so grateful that Mercy is a huge part of God. Without it, I can't even imagine where I'd be. Thankfully, going out of bounds doesn't end the game.

And that's what I was attempting to say.

With respect,
Charles1952

I am going to assume these kinds of people had other motives than being "men of god" for becoming priests.

It seems a pretty great job even at the lower levels, you make a short speech a couple times a week and get free car, cloths, food and even housekeepers.

I think a lot of priests turned to the church in the first place because their sexuality or pedophilia conflicted with everything they were taught in the church growing up. They didn't know how to reconcile so they tried to fold fully into the church in hopes that it would help. I've seen many priests whose body language and mannerisms suggest that they're homosexual but they were raised in a strict Catholic household so they refused to accept it. To clarify, I'm not suggesting that homosexuality and pedophilia are related... they aren't.

Yes, I agree. It's become a haven for men who cannot accept their own sexual inclinations. Protestants who try to "pray the gay away" are pretty much the same.

I am curious if you judge Obama the same, obviously these things continue under his administration. The difference would be Obama's kill list and his complete negation of constitutional rights for US citizens in his zeal to assassinate with drone attacks. Of course he is on tape claiming to be both Christian and Muslim this must make both faiths terrible by your description.

Honestly you shouldn't let your poor choice in women allow you to decide on the quality of ones faith. If that were the case I would never read the bible again or go to any church. I prayed and prayed asking God to send me something other than treacherous letches and it wasn't until I was 53 years young before I figured out he had been doing it all along I just preferred them.

I don't look at a single person or event and let it determine the outcome of anything. You must be a good person Luke the Darkside has been working you successfully.
