Many years ago I remember a science article that stated the moon was getting further away from us a couple inches a year. That NASA has a mirror on a little stand and they bounce a laser off it that's how they know it's moving. But I know NASA is not telling us the truth. It's getting closer every year. 199,987 years from now the moon will crash into the Earth and that will be the end of our beautiful planet. It won't be the end of our species but by that time we will need to find a new planet.

Although space is expanding it never made sense to me that Earth's gravity is pushing away our moon and not tightening the orbit.

I understand most of you guys don't care because you think You are not going to be around to see it.

I understand why NASA would lie to us in order to not create a panic.

When the moon does finally get here it's going to be one giant sad event.

My advice is enjoy her while she last. We may or may not find another one like her. Go camping in the forest or go to the beach and enjoy the many marvels she has.

If we had 200,000 years left.............who's going to panic?

I am seriously not trying to be funny, but how would letting us know about this cause a panic? If it is as you say, none of us, our children, their children, and many more generations of their children will never see it, so nobody would panic as we seem to never care about the things that will never affect us directly regardless of how scary it might seem. As long as we're alright, we seem to take things in stride... right or wrong. It is what it is.

I have long thought that earth would be decimated by a larger body myself, so I can buy it happening at some point or another completely. Maybe not the moon exactly... But another huge rock.

If the moon was actually moving closer then long before impact tidal forces would become so great that earth may well be destroyed.

NASA isn't lying, the Moon's orbit has been verified by amateurs and professionals alike. I believe there's a Phd students thesis kicking around on the boards somewhere where he himself did the experiment and the calculations.

There is observational evidence what you are saying is not true. But we should trust you because...? You believe this on a whim?

Stop The Presses: Moon to crash into Earth.

I don't think so. In the past the moon was closer to earth, and has been moving away gradually since. Why would it reverse course now? The moon may be made of green cheese (see: "Pizza doesn't do moon cheese justice, it is so darn good!" by Neil Armstrong, 'Pizza Today' magazine, August, 1969) but that cheese will keep its distance, thank you very much.

Two guys one scope:

Earth will be destroyed in 200,000 years? Yawn. We won't even be here. Hopefully by that time, we'll be spread so far and wide, it'll be shown on Galactic Pay Per View as a historical event.

No. You do not know the moon is getting closer.

No. The moon is not getting closer.

No. If the moon was getting closer nobody would panic.

No.

I'm not gonna lie to you, even I thought the Moon was looking bigger and therefore must be moving closer to Earth but I read somewhere a Month or so back that the Moon is looking bigger because of the 'Supermoon' spectacle:

Full moons vary in size because of the oval shape of its orbit and its elliptical path around Earth.

When in perigee, the moon is around 50,000 km closer than when it is furthest away, or in apogee.

And I guess as the day of 'Supermoon' approaches, the larger it will get over the days leading up to the final day.

Also known as a perigee moon, Tuesday's full moon will be around 14 per cent closer and 30 per cent brighter than when it’s at its furthest point from the Earth.

The moon usually appears at its largest on the horizon due to an effect known as the “moon illusion”. This optical illusion is created when the moon appears in the background against everyday objects such as trees and buildings and, although its not completely understood, it makes the moon appear even bigger - and look good in pictures.

Exactly, I'm not exactly going to jump out my window over having 200,000 years left of Earth. Hell, people will destroy it faster than that.

You DO realize that you could easily go substantiate NASA's claims with your own telescope correct? Nah, you'd rather just play the "NASA's a bunch of lying aholes" card without any evidence. Though, I am curious how you came to the conclusion that the moon is supposed to crash into the planet in 200,000 years. Why that number and not say 400,000 or 2,000,000? Of course, I'm pretty sure you just made it up on the spot, but thought I'd ask anyways.

ETA: This is the weirdest doom porn I've ever read. Even if it were true, it doesn't matter. It's like getting worried that the sun will destroy the earth in 1.75 billion years. Who cares? Like what is the point of NASA even covering something like that up?

Please don't give the government any ideas they may want to start a moon tax to keep the moon from getting closer, it would make as much sense as a carbon tax.

The Moon has been drifting away from Earth for about 4.5 billion years, when it was first formed.

Currently, the rate is about 3.78 cm per year (1.48 inches).

In around a billion years, it will be so far away that Earth will wobble and may tip over onto its side = bye bye all life on Earth.

Around the same time, the sun will begin its long, slow dying process - it will get smaller and about 40% hotter = bye bye all life on Earth.

We've got a billion years, folks.

That's if we don't get hit by an asteroid, so a billion at best.

If that happens, we would see the effects long before it actually crashes. Moon wouldn't likely even survive that close, it would be ripped apart by Earth's gravity. Because Newton's third law, that would affect Earth too, much smaller scale though. There would be massive tides and volcanic activity.

But this doesn't never happen. Moon gradually moves away from Earth about inch a year. Moon will move away from Earth until it reaches point of orbital resonance, when Earth's day and Moon's month will be equal. That will happen in about 50 billion years. Of course that will never happen, as Earth and Moon will be long gone before that event. Earth and Moon will be consumed by The Sun in 4 billion years.

Don't worry about the Moon, we are going to wipeout ourselves and this planet long before than.

It would be called Anthropomorphic moon orbit reduction. Of course, man's activities since the beginning of the industrial age are responsible for the reduction in orbit....

We would probably be taxed based on our mass......

It's a proven fact that obesity is responsible for the increased gravity of the earth.

200,000 years?

I think you would be more concerned about George Bailey and his diabolical plan to pull it down next Christmas!

Gravity doesn't push, it pulls.

Have you ever heard of the Sun? A star that has a stronger gravity pull than the Earth.

IF it is indeed getting closer, At a speed of a few inches per year, ....we would get this new HUGE mountain in 200 000 years, we could walk to avoid being crushed by it !!!!

All kidding aside, I think we have plenty of time to counter this.....that's if nothing else wipes us out first
